I reactivated my dating profile recently, and a good number of the messages are from men in different cities, states, even one guy who's in the military, based in my area, but currently on a peace mission in Africa. What are these guys thinking? Some of them come across as serious, writing detailed messages that seem sincere. One in a city 4 hours away has already suggested that if I'm open to considering him, he'll visit me in my city on weekends to start. I'm pretty sure I don't want to get into a long-distance relationship - just wondering why I'm getting so many contacts from guys far away.

I've been wondering just the same thing. I get messages from all over the world!

Maybe some men like LDR. That why he still has his world, his cave not invaded by a woman, he knows she's available when he's in the mood, like a bottle of beer in the fridge, and he meets her when he wants to.

Well, it doesn't cost them anything (or much if it does). If it's a dating site that shows everyone, they may not even realize you're not local. Also, at least some of those contacts from far away are scams. If you engage, there will be much back and forth, and then they'll ask you for money. Enough women fall for that that the scam continues.

Maybe you can say in your profile that you're only interested in local men?

Or you could try Craigslist, which is free, and which only lets you search locally (on purpose).

They're scammers or commitmentphobes. Take your pick - neither are what you're looking for or want in your life.

Yes, I think I'm going to just disregard these guys. The latest was one who'll be in my city for a few days for work. I'm not going to be anybody's business trip booty call or escort

Dunno what site you're using but I don't have that problem with POF. Other OLD sites I get tons of scammers. Seriously, how freaking dumb do they think I am, sending thousand $$$ to Nigeria or Ukraine to my future wife...right.

On the other hand there are genuine foreign women who want to get to know me, but I have always had negative experience with LDR anyway.

I went back to OLD in December and tried two different ones. I got hits on both of them by guys over 50 miles away. I just deleted those profiles and ignored them. On the "free" site, it's basically scammers (one of which I gave an alternate email addy to just for grins and giggles until he got reported and banned...and he promised me he didn't want money...) or guys just looking for a good time because they don't want to "invest" in a relationship.

The other site (which has to be a paying membership to even email another member) I've had more success with on dating and finding decent guys who are local.

You still have to "weed" out the PUA's who want to treat dating like a hookup no matter what site you are on, that's just a lesson learned unfortunately in the dating world. Even on reputable sites, OLD almost is starting to turn into a "bar scene". :(
