risjurad Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 if OLD doesn't mean online dating, then that's what I meant! On one hand, it seems desperate and sad to pay for premium/paid sites. Also, some of them do have fake profiles, or hired help to entice users to pay for their services (conflicting business model where the more helpful you are, the less return business they'll get, if ever). OTOH, some have argued that doing OLD in the first place is already sad and a bit depressing, so why not? Are there any OLD where the money paid was actually worth it? I had some suggestions where if you're going to pay, scout for online coupons or promos.
d0nnivain Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 Granted it was 10 years ago when I was on one but I used the most expensive one out there thinking that it would increase the likelihood of meeting somebody who wanted something serious. Dates I could get. I was interested in commitment. It seemed to work The few guys I had contact with where serious types.
PogoStick Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 Does this mean you haven't had luck on sites like OKcupid and POF? If you're in a small population area then a premium site won't be much better. I'd consider Match in a bigger metro.
salparadise Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 Do the free sites and pay for extra options if you think they'd be helpful. The reason is that the pay only sites have a lot of profiles that no longer have active subscriptions. You can't tell which ones they are, but the person behind the profile cannot read or respond to messages. They use the expired subscriptions to attract new sign-ups, and the new sign-ups to entice the no longer subscribed to pay again so they can read their messages. It sucks. The free sites don't have that issue. Okcupid is the best. It's well designed, well run, and provides a lot of information (match ratings based on questions), etc. POF is junk and all the others are full of scammers and shill profiles.
SwordofFlame Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 Tinder plus is a good idea. It's like $11 a month and you get unlimited right swipes. Will save you some time if you just want to mindlessly swipe right on everyone. I would think that's what most average guys do anyway.

d0nnivain Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 What about Match in a remote and rural area? I'm guessing the same difference? Your "problem" is the geography not the cost of the service or even the particular site you chose. Unless you find a local niche site that caters to where you live or you are open to an LDR, paid cite vs free isn't going to change the outcome. Would you be open to something like Farmers Only? It's a real dating site.

AverageJoe1986 Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 If you're good looking you won't need to pay the premium. If you're not good looking then paying money to have your profile added to the top of a search list won't increase your chances. These sites generally let guys create a free profile then when guys are getting nowhere their adverts suggesting that paying will make your profile more 'visible' seem more attractive. Believe me, your profile will be visible before you pay. It is just being ignored.

PegNosePete Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 I never found any reason to pay for a dating site, the free ones were perfectly good enough. The extra bells and whistles you get for "upgraded" membership are pointless. If you can message for free, that's all you need.
