Good evening, and Merry Christmas Eve! I have a dating question...

As much as I would prefer to meet people just out and about, it seems online dating is the way to go. I am not looking for a hookup, I would just like to date and get to know some people and see where it goes. I am actually living in a new town, so I don't really have friends in the area to introduce me to anyone.

Do you have any recommendations for online dating websites or apps where people are not looking for just hookups? And maybe something that you or someone you know have had luck with? I've thought of Match, but would rather not pay $20 a month toward a dating website. A friend of mine just recommended Coffee Meets Bagel, but I am not sure how I feel about it being connected to Facebook.

Thank you!

My 3 recommendations (all free)

OkCupid - Fewest users in my area relatively, but seems to have the highest 'quality' out of the many I've tried. Perhaps the most in-depth profiles with the templates and questions?

POF - Less 'quality' in general, but far more people. Takes more pulling of the weeds in the inbox, but that can be entertaining too.

Tinder - The only app I'd used in the bar to find someone to meet in town that night. Not speaking of a one-nighter, but see if meeting someone turns into a date. Quickest, but many on there are looking for a one-nighter.

One I highly recommend avoiding

Zoosk - It's set up to be a money trap. And there's definitely many fake users that send messages just for you to want to buy a membership. Fewer real users than 50% of OkCupid.

Here's my take....take it for what you will..

Okcupid-from my experience you will come up with less matches, but it's more personality based and you really put yourself out there as far as your interests go. That can create problems since prospective dates might read something they don't like. You list everything from your height to your hobbies then hope to strike up some good conversation before landing a date. Like I said, you will most likely find more interaction on there before you head off to your actual date.

Tinder- you will get tons of matches, but guess what, they get tons of matches too...it's strictly how attractive you are (or how photogenic you are). You don't have much written for yourself so you better be at least a 9-10 to be taken serious. Even if you do get a date, count on the other person having a few dates lined up as well.

POF-use to be a good site back in the day, but feel that a lot of trashy people are now on there strictly trying to hook up. You may find a few good matches, but good luck.

It's really a toss up between tinder and okc. I got a ton of dates on tinder and few made it past the first date, but on okc I had less interested in me but more made it past one date...usually I scored a few if not a relationship

Based on what I've heard Match.com is worth it.

I've had successes with Match but another good platform is Badoo.

Good luck with your search, remember to keep an open mind and to have fun! Don't stress about 'perfection' cos in OLD, it doesnt exists!
