CM2009 Posted December 24, 2015 Posted December 24, 2015 Welp the time has finally come to ask my girlfriend to marry me. I'm doing it on Christmas, the only issue is how to do it. Just looking for ideas, maybe something creative, I'll take everything into consideration, thanks in advance....
d0nnivain Posted December 24, 2015 Posted December 24, 2015 Pick a proposal that SHE will like. If she's a private person, respect that. Proposing on the jumbotron would be disaster. Decide on private -- just the two of you -- vs. public -- the last gift in front of the family with somebody having a camera ready. Inside vs. outside. Will you be on bended knee? Do you know what you will say? You have to say something. She wants to hear the Q not just see the ring & cry. Did you ask her father for her hand? Don't discard this as old fashioned. As much as my father loved my husband, he was heartbroken that DH didn't ask first.
Author CM2009 Posted December 24, 2015 Author Posted December 24, 2015 In terms of public vs private either or is fine. We've talked about marriage throughout our relationship (sparked by me) and she's ready. Nah I wouldn't do it on no Jumbotron, if anything in private or in front of one of our families. She's gonna meet me at my Parents house when I deliver gifts, I was also debating on doing it tomorrow but that idea is looking less and less like a winner. I will be on blended knee, now in terms of what I'm going to say, right now it's formulating. I guess I will speak from the heart, I just know at times I may get a lil nervous and I might speak fast so the main thing for me is to sloooooow done. But one thing my mom has always told me from the many bday/mother's day cards I've written over the years is that I'm very good for n expressing my feelings to someon who I care about so I'll probably go off the top of my head. In terms of asking her father unfortunately I wasn't able to meet him because he passed around this time last year, but I asked her Mother and she seems excited. Thank you so much for the options Pick a proposal that SHE will like. If she's a private person, respect that. Proposing on the jumbotron would be disaster. d0nnivain Posted December 24, 2015 Posted December 24, 2015 Speaking from the heart is lovely. Off the top of your head. . . not so much. You will be nervous, probably more nervous then you have been in your life. DH was shaking. I had to prompt him. He was sitting there looking at me with hope & expectation on his face, I smiled & joked, "What? I haven't heard any Qs yet." Which spurred him to speak lol Think of a few things. Have a few sentences formed in your head. Not rehearsed but something in case you freeze. Best wishes & happy planning!
Snakechammah Posted December 24, 2015 Posted December 24, 2015 Aww congrats in advance! Your girlfriend is a lucky woman! I have no advice about how to do it. My own personal preference is for a private setting - but to each is their own. What does your girlfriend like? You should know her better! Try to incorporate her interest (Game of Thrones style or Hello Kitty theme if she likes that stuff) - shows how thoughtful and considerate you are. Some posters like me could only sit and wish we'd have boyfriends who are posting on here planning a proposal!!! Lucky girlfriend indeed!! All the best, do update us what happened on Christmas Proposal Day!
Gaeta Posted December 24, 2015 Posted December 24, 2015 Awww :-) My ex-husband asked for my hand on Xmas Eve in front of my family by the Xmas tree. We were young (I was only 19) and it was important to me that it be done this way. He was not only committing to me but committing to my family. Now that I am much older if I were to get engaged again I would prefer for it to be in an intimate moment in a beautiful romantic setting. If you're not an elaborate man don't try to come up with a big speech. Something simple like I love you and want to spend the rest of my life with you - will you marry me. Keep the big vows for the wedding.
Author CM2009 Posted December 29, 2015 Author Posted December 29, 2015 Ok everyone thank you for your help. So here is what happened... She came over on Christmas Day after going to see her Father at his plot at the cemetery. My family was over and they already knew what I was about to do, but they remained quiet and unassuming. So she gave me my gift and I gave her "her's." I put the ring in her initial present which was a pair of shoes. So she was happy to get the shoes and I told her to try them on, so she got the first shoe and was bout to try the second one when she noticed something was in there, which was the box. She was like "what is this" as she was pulling it out. She was surprised when she saw it, and started to cry when I opened it and got on one knee. She said yes, she gave me a hug and kiss then my Mother, father and sister came and gave her a hug 4
