My partner said one of her favourite things about our first meeting, was that despite having my own car, I waited for her cab to arrive and saw her safely into it.

It actually is that simple, I think.

That being said, these things have to come from the right guy

You just contradicted yourself.

It's not so simple as following a list. You have to be "the right guy" as well.

Well, yes... It's that simple, if you're the right guy!

If you just follow the list to bag the girl then once you have her forget your manners, you're not being a gentleman :)

so do you have to have all 23 in place to be considered a gentleman, or do guys who do only 1 get that status as well??

Probably depends on whether the guy is after the status only or whether he actually does have basic manners ;).

FWIW, that's not what's attracted me to my boyfriend initially - these things are more endearing than anything else, frankly - but in his case, his gentlemanly ways are matched by his character.

None of these things may be deal-breakers / necessary / a reflection of someone's character, but they're not a bad thing either, IMO :)

Well... exactly.

That's like saying, how do you become an astronaut? You just go into space! It's that simple, if you're an astronaut.

I'm a still little confused as to what the contradiction was, but I'm glad we agree anyway! :)

The contradiction was, you said it's simple, and then went on to explain how un-simple it is.

"Be the right guy" is so not simple! It means totally different things to different people. You can't "be the right guy" by following this list.

To add to this, following some of the items on this list may make someone "the wrong guy".

How about we just add to the list of "gentlemanly" ideas:)

Here are a few:

I dated a guy last year...when I'd go over to his house, he'd park my car in the garage so it would be "warm" when I left.

He also used to tell me to call him when I was close...then he'd be outside waiting for me.

Another guy I dated used to tell me to call when I was close to the restaurant so he could have a glass of wine ready for me ... this was before I allowed him to pick me up...I'm rather cautious.

FYI...if I were on the fence about a guy...the behaviors in this article would send me over the edge and he'd become the right guy.

Thx for the great list Toodaloo!

How to be a gentleman...

Be respectful of women even when not in their presence.

I showed this list to my girlfriend. She glanced at it and said: "Being a gentleman is being like Christian Grey? I'm glad you're not a gentleman."

How is giving a jacket to your girlfriend when it's cold out "being like C Grey?"

Anyway...adding to the list:

Not using crude language/swear words (though a dirty joke is fine or during sexy time all bets are off)

She made the comment after reading the title and seeing the picture at the top.

Oh...not familiar with the actors in the movie or the book (though I've heard of it)...but I get what she's alluding to if that is Christian Grey.

Hope you'd still give your coat to your gf and she accepts:)

Gentleman offers girl his lobster

Girl gives guy massage under the table...(does that suffice for being a "gentlewoman"?)

Good point...but it was a restaurant date that would last 2 hours...I wasn't worried.

However...I wouldn't do this if just meeting a person at a sports bar.
