I MIGHT have my old job back :D

I am studying podiatry at college. I worked in a podiatry store selling medical grade shoes to podiatry patients...

The Podiatry employment market is over saturated and there are literally no jobs in my state and I WILL have to move once I graduate, 99% I will have to move states entirely.......However, if I have experience in the field ( students who work in podiatry related fields during college get jobs more readily) then I WILL have a great shot at getting a podiatry job without having to move states (which I don't mind moving but it would be ideal to have more job options in general)

So ANY work experience during college, particularly related to footwear or podiatry in any way, IS brilliant.

I got made redundant when my store closed. I saw a job offer for another one of their stores and applied.

HR was blowing up my phone the day I applied. The HR girl likes me. She said they had been interviewing people but as soon as she saw MY resume, she realised she didn't have to interview me and asked when I could start.

She said she would talk to the guy who was store manager and worked with me and get back to me.

OH NO! I was not the fastest at learning the paper work side of the business! The manager liked me on a personal level, said he thinks what the company did to me was wrong ( making me redundant once one of their stores closed).I DON'T think the manager will recommend that I work at the company again! Because I was not the best at my job.

Ugh. I was good with customers and I already have experience enough for them to not really have to train me aside from showing me where everything is. I KNOW I could be great at the job, it is just when I started out I didn't pick things up right away.

I rang HR back and had an honest discussion; I said look, I have always worked for myself so when I started with ___Insert name here_____ Company, I have to confess that the manager will probably describe me as making a fair few mistakes as I was getting the hang of things". I basically wasn't great at the paper work side of things when I started out. but told HR that it was something I can get the hang of an that I am willing to improve on.

HR said not to worry, we chatted for a while more and she said how glad she was to see my name again in her resume pile. She was cheery and said not to worry, I only worked with them for a couple of months and was NOT expected to get the hang of everything..... j

I sort of sucked at the old job - I mean, great with customers but slow at learning to write everything down paper work wise - It IS something I know I can be good at but it just was something I had never done previously and needed time to get a handle on.

I am praying that the manager who worked a little with me won't speak up too much about my lacking abilities in one or two areas! HR said not to worry and that she was on my side.

Fingers crossed guys......

By the way... being unemployed has SUCKED.

You make your previous experience with the company sound worse than just the standard ramping up, learning the ropes mistakes. What is the normal amount of time for a new employee to get up to speed? How far off the mark were you? While I understand you want to get experience in your field, the problems you had with the job make me wonder if this is the right job for you. Are there other jobs in your field you can get to gain experience that might be better suited to your skill set?

I think if HR calls again, you should be prepared to address why your performance will be better than it was in the past. What things will you do differently? How long do you think it will take you to learn how to do it right? You will definitely need to convince them that this time it will be different.

Good luck!
