Ok, lemme get this straight.

Some hunters were killing seals for the pelts. Is that legal where you are? Just curious.

I'm not judging anyone for killing animals in order to feed their families provided the animals weren't irresponsibly harvested. I would, however, judge such people for being needlessly cruel. There are more humane ways to kill an animal without damaging or staining the pelt. Most hunters, especially those hunting to fill a basic need, aren't going to stop hunting. But they can be educated on more humane ways to do it.

I belong to a few dog forums. On the forums are a few people who boar hunt with their dogs. Most of them are doing it because the wild boar population is quite destructive and they are an invasive species. The states with problems pay bounties for kills and the hunter gets to keep the meat. In areas where the problem isn't big enough for the state to pay a bounty, sometimes private landowners will pay hunters to come and harvest boars that are causing them problems.

I totally approved of this hunting because it's not inhumane. The boar are quickly killed with either a bow, gun, or a knife. The dogs get to do what they were bred and trained to do. The hunter gets to earn some cash and s/he also gets a freezer full of meat. The parts of the boar that people don't commonly eat are usually stored in a deep freeze and fed to the dogs, so they get their nutrition that way, too.

I'm really sorry that you had to kill a seal to prevent it's suffering. You know you did the right thing. I hope that over time you are able to put that bit of ugliness behind you.

in many ways the plight of a defenseless animal invokes the images of children...i disagree that animals are more precious to human compassion and empathy.........i support green peace and other animal organisations.....i also support human charities.......cerebral palsy ....mental illness .doctors without borders.... red cross..... salvation army.......one of the reasons why i am broke a lot.....

what i do notice with most charities and compassionate organisations is that they are prepared to support the needy and defenseless and the vulnerable....i think and feel that's what others feel...that the animals are vulnerable and defenseless...so when you witness brutality against them or senseless killing...you feel ...swamped with defensive protective emotions

i eat lamb, i have eaten veal i eat chicken......duck....and pork....i am not vegan ....i prefer however to believe that the animals i eat are treated with respect while they live...and that they are not clubbed to death with the mothers watching....

temple grandin an autistic woman written off in her childhood as brain damaged developed an abbatoirs run that provided cattle with a stress reduced death...the animals went to slaughter in relative peace to what they used too go with......

the big wigs pooh pooed her idea at first......but then they saw the light......and realised that more money could be had by introducing this run......

goes to show .....that humane is always best

you can be a hunter.....it shouldnt take autism or mental illness to figure out that animals matter to the human race ........they matter in life...and how they are killed matters...the animal kingdom is cruel and brutal for sure....however animals harldy ever waste a carcass.......but...what truly defines as human and not animal ...is we realise that cruelty can be avoided.....just because there is outrage with cruelty towards animals doesnt mean there is less outrage with human cruelty......look at the outpouring for the victims in paris...

there is no justification for humans to be cruel to either animal or person....deb
