Naive Posted May 27, 2005 Posted May 27, 2005 Also known as sulfamethoxazole. If so is it bad? That is the anti-biotic they gave me but it says it has caused several deaths so of course I got all paranoid. Should I take it?
swirlingdaisy Posted May 27, 2005 Posted May 27, 2005 People take that drug each and every day and have no problems....it's very commonly used around the world. Every single drug out there can cause very adverse reactions in a small fraction of the population, nothing is 100% safe. I think you worry far too much. Do you really think a Relationship Forum is a place to ask medical questions about whether you should take a very common antibiotic that you obviously NEED to take to ward off a severe infection that COULD cause you grave health effects?
moimeme Posted May 27, 2005 Posted May 27, 2005 Some people die from taking Aspirin. Deaths from taking drugs are very rare, though. I believe you're more likely to win a Powerball lottery.
Tony Posted May 27, 2005 Senior Moderators Posted May 27, 2005 There are some people with allergies to Sulfa drugs. Take them if your doctor prescribes them but report to him immediately if you have any kind of discomforting reaction to the drug. Remember, this forum is NOT a good place to get competent medical advice because licenced MD's seldom stop by here. Never rely on any medical advice someone may inadvertantly give you on an Internet forum.
Jlmic1 Posted May 27, 2005 Posted May 27, 2005 I've taken sulfa, I was fine. Unless you have an allergy to it, you will be fine too. If you have some kind of problem that your doc precscribed it to you, then you should take it. Good Luck to ya

Wow. Well, I'd rather her ask questions here rather than not ask them at all.
purple21 Posted May 27, 2005 Posted May 27, 2005 It's fairly common I think - I remember getting it for strep throat I took it a long time ago and was allergic - broke out into hives - yuck - but i'm allergic to penicillan and other drugs as well - wait a pain.
Author Naive Posted May 27, 2005 Author Posted May 27, 2005 Thanks. I guess you run the risk with any medicine like some of you have said. I spoke with my doc and he said it's real rare.
moimeme Posted May 28, 2005 Posted May 28, 2005 It is NOT a safe place to listen to people's 'medical advice' because, as Tony pointed out, nobody here is a professional. Naive, unless you live in Hicksville, there will certainly be a 24 hour pharmacy in your town. Call a pharmacist if you have any questions about a drug - they are really the best folks to advise you if your physician isn't around. You can also go to the Medscape site, register (it's free) and they have a drugs database that you can search to find out all you want to know about any med.
HokeyReligions Posted May 28, 2005 Posted May 28, 2005 Sulfa's been around for a while in different forms. I had a reaction to it as well, but it was nothing serious---I've had a worse reaction to aspirin! Did you read in the accompanying pamphlet that it has caused several deaths? It's good that you are reading labels and taking the time to learn about the drugs that you are given--a lot of people don't do that. I'm glad a few people did mention talking to doctors and/or pharmacists because others who may pass by and read the thread might not have thought to do that, or might think that opinions expressed here can be substituted for medical advice -- so in that regard its good to share opinions on what to do. I hope that whatever you are taking it for clears up/heals quickly & you feel better.
faux Posted May 28, 2005 Posted May 28, 2005 I am allergic to sulfa drugs, and know this because a doctor discovered this when I was very young. It might help to ask a parent about any known allergic reactions you may have to drugs; such information may have been discovered during your childhood. It is definitely a good idea to speak to a doctor about this.
Author Naive Posted May 30, 2005 Author Posted May 30, 2005 Well I've been taking it for a couple of days now and thankfully it does not seem to have caused any rare symptoms, except that I get real bad headaches but I just pop in some advils!!!!
shamen Posted June 1, 2005 Posted June 1, 2005 I'm glad that people have mentioned that you should talk to your doctor/pharmacist re: your concerns. It is really important to maintain open communication with your doc. I had an allergic reaction to a sulfa class drug... broke out in hives. Fun fun fun. And it happened after 5 days or so. The doc told me that this is fairly common with people that end up allergic to these types of drugs, that someone can use it for a few days and then the reaction can show up later. Again, this is just my experience...
