Instead of spending this day together, my aunt wants to go out and buy a TV. She said she can't go out for dinner because she needs to go shopping. I hate how the stores are open on Thanksgiving, they should be closed until Friday.

Last year these family members rather watch football than go out to dinner as well.

Should I be annoyed?

I would be annoyed too but you can't change people & it's not a productive emotion.

Set up the Thanksgiving you want & be happy with the people who share your values. Let the rest go.

I feel bad for the employees of those stores who are forced to spend time away from their families.

Football on the other hand has always been a part of the tradition. As a kid I remember getting "kicked out" of grandma's house in the morning to go watch dad's HS play my uncle's HS in a long standing rivalry.

Ugh. If I were forced to watch football on any day - Thanksgiving or not - I'd blow my brains out.

Why do you go out for dinner? No one in the family cooks?

This is just another example of the fabric of the family being torn apart by the society we live in. I came to the conclusion after 2 years of Black Friday shopping that I would rather sit at home in peace with my family. Most of the items that these stores sell are low end crap to begin with and unfortunately the retailers are targeting the lower income wage earners to fatten their year end books. Just go search on youtube for Black Friday Walmart fights and you'll see what I'm talking about.

No, it's the fabric of the family choosing to tear itself apart.

The TV store is not forcing anyone to visit to buy things or get into fights. The people who choose to do so, choose to do so of their own free will.

As donnie said. You can't force people to spend their time as you would like them to. Just do as you please with the people who want to spend it with you. And spare a thought for the servers, cooks and managers who are working in a restaurant instead of being with their families...

Agree with this. It sounds like you have some people in your life who don't share your values. I prefer to spend the holiday in and can't imagine why people want to spend the day in crowds (especially when it's so easy to buy online now). You're not alone in wanting to spend the holiday the way you want.

Good for her. She is an adult and can choose to do as she likes.

I assume you are an adult and the same. Why don't you watch football with family members?...because you choose not to.

What is 'normal' holiday behavior according to who? I am a vegetarian and also dislike big meals. I think the ideal Thanksgiving is going for a long hike in Nature and then having a veggie snack. Why doesn't everyone do the same?

Um.. it's her choice what she does. Not everyone goes in for big overblown forced family holidays. Why not focus on spending it with someone who wants to spend it with you?

Agreed....

In the almost 40 years of life on this miserable planet I tried Black Friday twice.....what a freaking waste.

Right now if you go to a Walmart, you'll see TVs on sale....pleeze. So need to wait till Thanksgiving, GO SHOP NOW!!!

I think whoever came up with "black" Friday should be labeled as a racist for such a politically incorrect term to be used....which, is used to name a time of the year where people are at their lowest and worst basic behavior. They stomp and trample others...stores take people away from spending quality time with their loved ones (and in retail you're lucky if you actually can accumulate vacation, sick, and/or holiday leave or time off that's paid for).

I do Black Friday with my family every year & we always have a blast.

Shopping on Thursday would never even enter our minds. We value family togetherness big time in our family and we'd never shop on Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving is a day to spend with people we love.

That's it.

Gloria, Black Friday is not a racial thing. It started as an accounting reference. Accountants write in red ink for losses and black for profit. Many stores operated in the red till this time frame. So they started to call it Black Friday because of profit levels.

It's not a racial reference. It's a FINANCIAL reference. It was the day that most store owners turned a profit for the year. They were operating in the RED until the end of November. They opened their stores the day after Thanksgiving because many people already had the day off & could jump start their holiday shopping. As a result, the merchants were said to finally be in the BLACK.

Yea, I just think it's ashame workers have to work on Thanksgiving. It should be a day about reflecting on what your thankful for and being with loved ones. Thanksgiving has turned into a day to get through to get to the holiday season. Retailers see it as a day to make money. I will be spending Thanksgiving with family members that want to actually be with me. I just don't understand why people can't wait until Friday to shop. Nobody in my family cooks, so we always go out to a great restaurant. I just was surprised and insulted these certain family members can't take an hour out of their shopping to eat dinner with me. I just think this whole shopping thing has gotten to be ridiculous. There are deals all throughout the season.

These family members made it a point to call me today to remind me they won't be joining the thanksgiving dinner. They have to shop for TV's and other electronics at 4 in the afternoon, no idea why it will take them hours to shop, we are eating at 7, which gives them plenty of time to shop.

We all get along, so it's not a matter of them not liking me. They just rather shop than be with loved ones.

Doesn't this seem a bit hypocritical to you?

They made their choice. It is a free country after all.

So, you think it's a shame for people to work but always go out to eat instead of cooking at home... are you saying that nobody who works in restaurants deserves to spend Thanksgiving at home with their family?

As for being 'insulted' come on, quit the drama already! It's not a personal insult because they want to do something different to you. Honestly you sound pretty high maintenance. I wonder if that's why they refuse to play ball with you and are going off to do their own thing instead.

And finally, you say they 'made it a point to call today to remind me they won't be joining Thanksgiving dinner', they obviously care enough to CALL you to make sure you know of their plans and so not to expect them, and that's still not good enough for you?

Just lay off them and do what you want to do without expecting everyone else in your family to bend to your rules. I wouldn't attend the dinner either if I felt like it was non negotiable and gonna get someone bent way out of shape over it. What's the fun in doing something you feel forced into?

Our family has removed the craziness of the holidays and shopping by utilizing the gift exchange process. We put everyones name in the hat, and we each pick one name, and buy 1 gift for whosever name we pulled within a predetermined dollar amount.

As far as all that black friday crap....most people that dont work in retail do not realize that many of those "amazing sale" items are actually lower quality junk. The electronics especially...TV's, computers, mp3 players, printers, etc.... A lot of those items are made specifically for the black friday sales with lower quality parts. Thats why they are so much cheaper than the regular everyday items. A lot of the TV's are also stripped down versions off a higher priced model. Most idiot low-brow consumers that flood into Walmart on black friday know nothing about TV's. They just want the biggest screen they can find for the lowest price. So the manufacturers started making stripped down versions to sell to the lower income consumers.
