A very interesting social experiment was done in Adelaide, SA, AUS: A man posing blind was asking for change for a AUS $5 note. But he held out a $50. So people were put to a dilemma: (a) Be honest and tell the guy that he was holding out a $50 instead of a $5. (b) Take advantage and give change for the $5 while taking the $50 and net $45. He asked around 7 people.

(A) Turns out ABOUT HALF took advantage and took the $50 while giving change of the $5.

(B) The other half was honest and told the guy that he was holding a $50.

and for many posters on here at least, the HUGE punchline....

© Of the 3 women he asked, ALL THREE were honest and told the guy he was holding a $50. One even gave him change and didn't take any bill from the guy (she did have some change but not the full $5).

So that women in Western Society are all liars out to take your money....well there goes *that* theory on here

Blind Man Honesty Test - Shocking Results

Interesting, but needs a bigger sample size. Most of the guys I'm close to IRL (family, friends, SO) would definitely have told him about the $50. (Most of the women I know would too, of course)

Interesting experiment, but you need to test about 100 people to start drawing any conclusions. Better still if you can record more info about the subjects (age, background, etc).

I wonder how the percentages would change if he was holding out a note of lower value so the 'crime' would be smaller?

I was in the Hyatt in Panama City Panama going back to my room, somewhat intoxicated. Go up the elevator, exit it at my floor.....and some local looking dude in a suit seems to be passed out on the floor. What was weird was he was holding probably $2,000 worth of $100's fanned out in both hands.

I knew IMMEDIATELY it was a set-up lol. I just stepped around and went to my room.

What do you think it would take to buy those guys out? For myself, $50 wouldn't even come near. $2,000....not that big of a deal. If I had really thought that dude that was passed out was actually in need of help, I would have helped him, but I was sure it was a set-up. Seriously, he had $100's perfectly fanned out in both hands where it can be easily seen. Who the **** passes out like that. It was either some stupid TV show or.....much worse. Panama is a cool city, but I play it safe.

Now how about enough money that it's a life changer that you gain in a dishonest way, but will cleanly get away with. $50 is nothing, you'd have to be some heroin drug addict (or on that level for self-respect) to go for that.

For me; anyone lying in this situation is beyond scum. How is this even in a realm of possibility?:sick::sick:

I actually think that in general people are much kinder than we think.

Its only the minority that ruin it for the rest.

Sadly you don't hear much about the majority as its not all that shocking. So we hear loads about the minority of nasty people which in turn makes it seem as though there are far more nasty people out there than kind.

As a gender women tend to be more nurturing so it makes sense that they wouldn't do this to a blind man, he is to be "nurtured" because of his blindness. Men as a gender tend to be more hunter gatherer and each man fends for himself... so it makes sense that they wouldn't care so much...

Note here - those are very sweeping generalizations dating back to the caves where men would fetch the food and women would look after the cave... But those are the instincts that are within genders hence why we are different.

Well, poke me in the eye with a rusty nail. He met 3 honest women? "Blindness" does have it's advantages then!

Anyone who's ready to sell out their principles at a set price really has no principles.

Everybody acts like they have principles and then one day you see plainly they were just acting or it's a matter of how much. Words are easy to say or type. I have seen people rationalize the most heinous things so they can make believe their actions are just and the people they wrong deserved it. These are people that will swear up and down all day long that they hold themselves to the HIGHEST of principles.

I think a lot of people are pretty dishonest if they think no one else will ever know. Just like I think a lot of girls like being promiscuous as long as no one they don't want knowing finds out.

I know I wouldn't try to rip the blind man off.

I even had this scenario happen quite a bit since I am a cashier at Wal-Mart. Perhaps once every 2 weeks, I get a customer that accidentally hands me more money than needed. Like, for example, their bill is $54.86 and they gave me 4 $20 bills as opposed to 3.

Never once did I try to short change these customers, especially since I could have gotten away with it. That is just who I am.

With that said, I also have come to terms that I can't expect such treatment from others. Due to my lack of memory, I have lost all kinds of semi-valuable stuff. It is insanely rare to hear that it has been found and is there to be returned to me. If anyone has found it and is aware of the value, they kept it.

It just goes to show that I am really all alone in this big world. While people can generally trust me, it is clear that I can't do the same towards them.
