about a year and a half ago, my boyfriend started dating a girl. From what I know, they got together, it was pretty intense, and he broke up with her after a few months. He's never said why, but he had plans to go travelling and I believe it put a strain on the relationship.

Well, any partner keeping in contact with an ex will be an area of concern, that is perfectly natural feeling.

 

Doesn't mean it is bad or wrong, just concerning.

 

Ideally you should try not to be jealous,, be cool, and ideally he should not hide anything from you, being open and honest.
