tanbark813 Posted May 20, 2005 Posted May 20, 2005 I've noticed a trend lately. It seems like the more a girl is into Sex and the City, the more likely she is to be a spoiled little princess who expects the guy to make all the moves without her putting forth any effort whatsoever towards the relationship. Anyone else had this experience?

Anyone else had this experience? Come on TANBARK... you really believe that??? That show has 4 different chicks on it that are all different relationship wise. Maybe you are just attracted or drawing the attention of the girls that are like Charlotte the more spoiled of the 4. I bet if you had more Samanthas after your tail you wouldnt be complaining.
TUDOR Posted May 20, 2005 Posted May 20, 2005 Now that my wife owns all seasons on DVD and has watched all of them, more than once I might add, I would have to say tanbark is on to something here. Don't get me wrong I have always enjoyed spoiling my wife but since the Sex and the City obsession it has come to be expected from me to keep up this treatment. WTF? And the spoiling has become very one sided, me doing all the spoiling. It's just a show for crying out loud not a how to instructional video! Tanbark thank you for confirming my suspisions!
tiki Posted May 20, 2005 Posted May 20, 2005 LMAO.....Sex and the City.....they know how to make 'em! It's what men have been doing to women for years. I think it's great.

Yeah, it very well could be something I do that attracts a certain kind of woman, or a certain kind of woman I'm attracted to. My original post was just from my own experience so it's going to be a little biased. I was just wondering if I was alone on my opinion, but.... Originally posted by TUDOR WTF? Anyone else had this experience? This is one show I avoid like the plague. I don't agree with much that goes on in that show, but at the same time to each their own. I think its normal that once a show like that reaches the hieght of popularity, that people begin to mimic it. Remember Miami Vice and the white leasure suits with the pink T-Shirts? What the hell was I thinking? And I'm sure there was a coffee house boom shortly after Friends and Frazier reached the height of their popularities. So the fact people relate and quote these shows isn't all that unsual, however now goes to the real issue, do you let TV define who you are? So a person who defines a relationship or your actions on a TV show based on some very unusual and unrealistic situations may not be the best partner to have. I put this right up there with romance novels. That's my 2 cents.
prisoner Posted May 20, 2005 Posted May 20, 2005 blame TBS. notalot of women watch HBO. In fact it was only the last two seasons that saw SEx get more female than male viewers on HBO. But once it gets to TBS (available on basic cable and edited enough to watch without embarrassment) the Sex girl attitude enters the flyover and becomes mainstream. The cosmo beconmes hot to tro in wichitaw. women in cincinnatti start looking for manolos. look, it is why designers get rich selling stuff at target. you are right. it is happening. they all watch Sex and dream of Mister Big. JUst wait, though. you will catch a girl quoting a line from season three and you will be able to say, 'you know the thing about those women is that they all came to understand that they were miserable the way they were'. oh and they could afford to buy their own drinks.
billybadass36 Posted May 20, 2005 Posted May 20, 2005 I concur with the SITC syndrome having impacted me here in the midwest. I'm also starting to observe "Desperate Housewives" syndrome in my household as well.
ReluctantRomeo Posted May 20, 2005 Posted May 20, 2005 Originally posted by TUDOR It's just a show for crying out loud not a how to instructional video! Exactly! Frasier fans don't start analysing each other and having ridiculous tantrums. Cheers fans didn't become heavy drinkers. And Star Wars fans don't queue for hours dressed as their favourite Jedi... hmmm, well... The sad bottom line is that all of us are influenced by the media. And some female demographics are particularly vulnerable - hence the fact that advertising targets them hardest.
LucreziaBorgia Posted May 20, 2005 Posted May 20, 2005 That's so weird to see this thread. I was just now getting on my shoes to go rent Season 4: Disc 3 of Sex in the City from Blockbuster. I'm afraid that I don't quite fit the category you described in terms of the type of women that watch this. I really do enjoy watching the show, though. I tend to see it as "relationship/lifestyle porn" - stuff that just won't fly in the real world, but no less worth some harmless fantasizing over it nonetheless. I don't watch 'Desperate Housewives' - that's my time for tuning into my TV boyfriend Vincent D'Onofrio on "Law and Order: Criminal Intent" -

One of my favorites - everytime someone says Norm you drink! And have you seen all the people sleeping on sidewalks waiting for the new Star Wars movie to open and they are dressed in full Star Wars regalia??? I really want a Storm Trooper outfit for some reason. All in all though I would say that TV does influence culture (obviously) but conversly I could say this... Hey ladies - has anyone noticed that Homer Simpson is ruining men?? All he talks about is boobies, waffels and beer??? I know many men like that.

All four of the characters are possible female role models in some way or another. I don't think women strive to be like Charlotte, who comes across as needy and weak. Most women I know admire Samantha, but can't pull it off in their own lives without feeling like whores. Miranda is, I suppose, the one to whom most professional women I know can relate and the one with whom men would most like to have a long term relationship. And Carrie is an amalgam of the other three. Originally posted by tanbark813 I've noticed a trend lately. What these characters have to do with not making any moves is completely beyond me. If they like a man, they seem to work really hard at doing their part in the courtship, be it getting along with his friends, doing what he likes sexually, or trying giving him space when he needs it. They may be fickle, but not spoiled or lazy.

I'm saying that the women who are the biggest fans of the show seem to harbor similar personality traits (among themselves, not similar to those on the show).

You don't necessarily feel it has anything to do with the context of the show. You could just as easily polled a group of women who watch Matlock or something and found them all to be spoiled princesses. Are you sure you weren't implying that, in your opinion, the behavior of the women you've encountered was somehow related to what goes on in that particular program (Sex in the City, not Matlock)?

Not only that, but the violent video games I play have turned me into a weapon packing psychopath, with repetitive obsessive thoughts of twisiting knives in my dates. Maybe I should get outdoors more.

I can't make a statement like that because I've only seen 2 or 3 SATC episodes so I don't know a lot about the show. Your first paragraph was what I meant. I should have made my original post more clear. It's not so much that watching that show will completely change a woman, it's that the women who are most drawn to that show have their negative personality traits encouraged and emphasized.
