So I've been texting a guy friend of mine today. He asked for my number so I figured what ever it's just to get in touch from time to time.

I was wrong the guys into me and wants to flirt so I'm done with that.

I'm starting to feel like it's almost always a bad idea to start texting with someone of the opposite sex that you are not interested in. It usually ends up encouraging too much flirting and such things.

What do you think?

It depends. It is very bad to deliberately have flirty interactions with members of the opposite sex while in a relationship but basic nondescript friendship interactions are fine. If your interactions do not harm or undermine your relationship.

My take on this is:

When we enter a relationship we keep our already existing friends of opposite sex. People of opposite sex we meet afterwards can be acquaintances but No new 'besties' of opposite sex while in a relationship.

I would never ever give my phone number to a man while I am in a relationship. I cannot think of one good reason why I would do that.

This.

OP - I think you did the right thing by stopping it before it got worse. You can definitely be friends with the opposite sex, while obviously using common sense as to when it's crossing a line.

I agree with this.

And here is the funny thing. Recently I seem to have hit a string of women who give me their contact details, flirt, etc who are in relationships.

I dunno, but I get the feeling people today really don't place all that much value on the fact they are in relationships.

If I ask you for your number, you give it to me, and I'm texting you, it's because I'm looking to get with you. No grey area. I wouldn't ever ask someone for their number to be their friend.
