How do I avoid becoming just an "in between" relationship for a girl?

Let's say I am in a serious relationship with a girl. She has loved a guy strongly before me. I, on the other hand, have never loved a girl. She is my first love and I am not hers. But we love each other.

Let's say this same girl leaves me. To me, it will be absolutely devistating because she is my first love. However, will I just become an "in between" for her?

Some people say your first love and your most recent/current are the ones that really stick with you.

It depends on how long it's been since the previous relationship for her. If it's fairly recent, less than a year, the only way to not be the "in between" guy is to not be the in between guy. Let someone else be that.
