The reason is what you say in your first sentence: that people tend to get together with people who are like them.

 

I have a comfortable income and I want a guy who also has a comfortable income. He does not have to earn more than me but he should not earn a lot less than I. The reason is very simple: I want my life to be better when I have a relationship. If we both make good money we can do things together that we could not do when on our own. Also, if things go wrong, I want to be sure that I won't be poorer after the relationship than I was before.

 

In any case, if the guy is well read, clean and hardworking, chances are slim that he is homeless.

Also if you are being honest this "brainwashing" is not only happening to young women, EVERYBODY is getting messages that they "DESERVE" this and that.

Sorry, but I disagree with you. Women specifically are being told that they deserve the best, 6'2" male model who makes over 100k a year, regardless of how they themselves look and what THEY bring to the table. Online dating specifically has created the illusion of endless choice. Women don't want a good man; they want the PERFECT man.
