Tell 'em you're a lawyer. I've been pulling it off for decades.

How about professional dog walker? You might need to print up some fake business cards...and possibly a fake web site.

If you want to lie and do something, lie and take a night course at that college and hire a tutor so you can pass math and graduate. Don't be silly! You may be able to fool your mom, but you won't fool any employers.

If you're just gonna refuse to discuss details of the 'job,' what does it matter what job it is?

Yes! Think about it...who wants to discuss the details of dog walking?? You take walk, stick doo-doo in bags, and go home. I've heard you can make good money doing this. Perhaps more so, if you live in an upper middle-class/rich area.

What if you CAN'T discuss the details of your job? Yea, that will work. My brother had extremely high security clearance. I'll be damned if I know what he spent thirty years doing.

Yea, go with that. 'sorry, I could tell you, but then I'd have to kill you'.

I have it on good authority that he failed his AA, and lied to you 'bout that.... :D

If someone is poking their nose in, one of my favourite lines is, conspiratorially asking them:

"Can you keep a secret...?"

"Yes..." (They always reply....)

"So can I." *wink*

And then I say nothing further.

Say you're an artist, an abstract expressionist and people ask questions then start talking about long winded metaphysical stuff and artist angst in big important sounding words. They'll either be very impressed or will stop asking questions.

That's a good one.

No artist was ever rich in their lifetime.

With the possible exception of Picasso....

However, like all great artists, you must leave a trail of lascivious and titillating scandal, to be discovered after your death....

They all do, you know......

Have you tried taking math classes over summer?Typically more individualized. Did you have a tutor for math class? Most schools have free tutors. I'm not that good and I actually had to repeat statistics this summer and got a B.

I have taken the math course twice, been tutored and studied hard. I just don't get it and I can't afford to keeping taking it, especially since it doesn't even count.

Say you volunteer somewhere. And then, actually volunteer somewhere.

I actually do volunteer for many non profit organizations, however my family doesn't care and think it's a waste since i don't get paid.

I'm lost here....."remedial math"? WTF? At Community College there is no such thing as that. There is General Education courses, which you must pass before even being allowed to test to the college, then there is "Business Math", which you must pass to get your PROGRAM DEGREE. There is no such thing as a Liberal Arts Degree round here at Community Colleges.

Applied Science Associates Degree? Is that what is being spoken about for AA?

Go take that math course and GET YOURSELF TUTORED on math and get your made up degree.

Otherwise, I fail to see how you are living and paying your bills if not for living off of student loans.

Volunteering is a great lie too. Perhaps your family will volunteer you to a job they could recommend?

Well my college requires remedial math before you can reach the math level that counts towards your degree. I have been tutored, I just can't do algebra. I do volunteer, but my family only wants to hear about things you make money doing.

My immediate family such as parents, siblings, close friends know the truth about my AA degree and my struggle with math and to find work. However, my extended family doesn't know and that's why I needed a made up job ideas. I don't want my family to think I'm stupid or a bum. My parents are ok with me lying about my job because they know our extended family can be mean and unsupportive when people are unemployed.

tell the truth. you might be pleasantly surprised to learn how understanding and accepting people are especially family. don't take their opportunity to love you away from them by reinforcing your negative beliefs about them "critical" .

I do like my family and I want to go. I have a nice time, but I need to say I'm working. I just can't say I'm unemployed or I will be made to feel like a bum. My family is big on education, careers etc. They won't understand about the math issue or the not finding work. I don't want them to think I am stupid and going nowhere in life. I need a made up job, any suggestions?

Tell them that you're working with in a therapeutic capacity with somebody who has various family problems. That it's confidential work therefore you'd prefer not to discuss it at length. If they ask you what the pay is like, just say "it's rewarding enough" and leave it at that.

So some of your family knows the truth but you want to lie to other family members? This doesn't seem like a recipe for disaster for you? You don't think anyone else will slip up and then you are now seen as lying as well as still not having a college degree and job? Kind of compounds it.

Why lie? Just say I don't care to discuss and change the subject or walk away. Why be something you are not to appease their rigid standards?

And if you couldn't pass with a tutor have you been tested for any learning disabilities? That can get an accommodation. Have you talked to the counselors and other resources at the school?

I am struggling to understand the road block on this as my experience, in multiple schools, was your effort would pass you. That if you are working very hard and the instructor knows it, you get a C. They are not in the business to just fail people especially at the community college level.

Have you tried taking math online? The tests are generally open notes. I have a learning disability and math is my weakest subject. You are just making excuses at this point. I've gotten no less than a C ever besides the D I originally had in statistics. Got a B when I retook it. Have you been evaluated for a learning disability so you can have extra time on tests?

Undertaking and maintaining such a broad spectrum lie would be soul-killing to me ....which seems like it would be worse than a few recriminations from distant family members. To each their own I guess.

Undertaking! I think we're there.

'I can't talk about it; it just depresses more'.

Ya, I dunno.....I think it would be more important to lie on a RESUME at this point than to worry about your ego tripped out extended family.

Don't you know .....if you would have applied yourself in that math class that:

Interest = Principal x Rate x Time?

Those are sweet ballooning/Variable Rate student loans you have and in 3 years that interest rate will go sky high. Ohhhhhhh, deferment will make it worse too btw.

I will never tell my extended family I'm unemployed. My parents, siblings are on board with me telling them I tutor. Again my family will most likely just move along and talk about other things. It's not like I will be lying for hours about this. It's like a 2 second convo with a relative or 2.

As far as math, I have taken it twice and online. I just don't understand it. I can't afford to keep taking it. I have a 3.9 GPA because I've gotten A's in all other subjects. My professor doesn't care about effort because it's a pass or fail class. There are quizzes and then in person you have to answer 50 fill in the blank questions.

I don't have loans, my parents paid for my community college. I am on my own for my BA though.

It appears that you can keep affording to retake it until you pass it, since your parents are ultimately paying for this first part of your education.

You can't get a BA if you don't get your Associates. Finish it, or I suspect you will be disappointing your parents and their hard earned monies that are a gift to you.

Not sure what kind of math you're doing, but check out Khan Academy.
