I love it because I get to also exercise my hands - I've got rather long and skinny arms. I've never tried working them up decause I was afraid of Popeye's arms, lol!

Anyway, Auz, thanks!

No probs :) - glad some of my useless knowledge comes in handy. Btw just to clarify, when I mean go down onto your elbows, I mean so your elbows and hands touch the ground - it helps spread the weight of your body, rather than just your elbows taking all the strain.

Another tip - dont weigh yourself every day etc....every 1 or 2 weeks will do...otherwise you'll lose heart and get demoralised when you dont see any changes.

And about avoiding beer - Beer actually has less kilojoules (or calories) when compared with other alcoholic drinks. 100ml of lager has only approx 39 calories. Even a dry white wine has 69 calories, a red has 72 and a sweet white has 107 calories per 100ml. Coca-Cola has 41 calories and juice is slightly less

The reason you gain weight from a beer, is because a standard beer has 350+ ml (or 500ml in Europe), as opposed to a bourbon and coke or wine which will have 150-200ml. And you wouldnt have 5 or 6 glasses of Orange Juice at the bar would you:) - So drinking beer isnt the issue, just watch how many mls you drink!

And something to think about when considering that one junk food meal? A Large Cheeseburger has approx 600+ calories, a regular milkshake has 360 and regular fries have 240. Now on a pedaling machine I can burn approx 200 Calories in 20 minutes going at an above average rate - so that junk meal will take me at least six 20 minute sessions to burn off. I dont know about you, but Id rather have a sandwich and some water, and let those six sessions burn off fat I already have!

Hrmmm, writing all this I should really start taking more of my own advice:P Ive lost about 5 Kg in the last 2.5 months without overly trying (that beer is so tempting:P), but trying to watch what I eat, and regular excercise seems to be helping..pity Im still such a fatty:P - ah well slow and steady

Posted

Oh - the main reason so many beer drinkers have big bellies? It aint the beer, as much as the salted peanuts, crisps and other food they munch on while drinking the beer - drink the beer - eat the salty food - get thirsty from the salt - drink more beer - eat more etc etc

Avoid the nuts and a) you'll eat less crap food and b) you'll drink one or 2 less beers (250 Calories!)

Its the little things that make a difference:)

I said READ the posts!!!!

You may run 2 hours twice a day as far as I'm concerned, it's your body!

You know what will happen? You'll get tired, and sore and there is a chance for your body to crash if you're pushing it like that.

You need to change your lifestyle here, if you want to do yourself a favor. Take breaks between running, get rest, get toned up and exercise regularly.

Worst case scenario: you run every day, achieve your goal and then you stop! And then, in very very VERY little time, all the fat will come back. Don't go there. It's like building a house, you need a STRONG foundation if you want a good house.

I mean, at least have the deacency to pretend you readed our advice if you're asking for it ! Jeez!!!!

I remember in high school when I was being conditioned for the mile run test, that I had a HORRIBLE time running. But eventually, I could jog the entire mile.

I've never been able to run :( I'll jog for a little bit, and then I can't breath, and my heart beats out of my chest, and my side hurts :( I drink water, and that gets rid of the side pain a little bit, but I CAN'T RUN!!!

:(:(:(:(:(:(:( How the heck does one build up to it? I can barely run for thirty seconds :( It's always been my dream to run, but I'll do it for a minute, and then I'm ready to die...and I feel like why should I bother :(

Hey :) That website looks doable. A minute of jogging, and then a minute and a half of walking for 20 minutes :) i can do that :)

Monday,

Go to http://www.coolrunning.com

It has a 5 k running plan that I used to get going 2 months ago. I love it. I am glad I did it.

Use your own body as an indicator of how much to run. Run till you get tired, then walk until you are no longer tired, then run again. Do this until you build up your time. That simple. That's what I did and I can run 5 miles uphill.

I read this whole thread yesterday and was actually inspired to go out and give a try at jogging. I loved it....until the splitting pain in my side kicked in and my throat got sore from breathing to hard LOL

Is there anyway to cope with that. Anywho, I made it ten minutes (about 5 minutes jogging, 5 minutes walking) and had to call it quits.

Fortunately, this didn't turn me off and I'm looking forward to getting out there again today! I've actually even talked my boyfriend into doing it with me :D

You know ...........you cant gain weight from taking vitamins. The only thing in vitamins that carry any caloric value at all, is the starch filler. Thats what holds the vitamin together. In capsules, the calories come from the gelatin that coats the vitamins. You could literally swallow 10 bottles of vitamins and you'd die before you gained even one pound. The calories in the filler or gelatin isnt enough to even make a dent. It is impossible to gain weight from taking vitamins. Ive asked Dr.'s this too because I had a millions questions like this right before I lost all my weight.

Posted

I look at it this way..................would you gain any weight if you ate ONE M&M before bed every night? I know it sounds stupid but I figure a vitamin couldnt possibly do the damage an M&M could do. And one M&M is nothing!! :)

Vitamins in themselves don't make you fat. Far from it. What they do is increase your appetite.

I've talked to a friend of mine - skinny as a stick, she gained... 20 pounds in less than 6 months. She took vitamins to prevent her hair falling. She was 125 lb all her life, btw.

It's real. Trust me it is.

Running is great. I started running at 37 and now I do 3 to 6 miles almost every day (hills are wonderful). I had a rather hefty backside and thighs and I completely changed my body. The only thing is, is that if you do run a lot you need to eat heartily as well. The first year I was down below 105 and I looked older and sickly - even though I felt wonderful. Now I make sure I eat 5 or 6 small meals a day and I eat pretty much whatever I want. I gained weight. I weigh 118 and look a whole lot better. Running is my therapy. I hit the road and think and sing songs in my head and I come back ready to take on anything. I recommend it to anyone!!!!!!

You can't gain weight from vitamins. You get the nutrition your body needs, so there is less temptation to eat the foods to get them from.

Everyone I know who take vitamins are in way better shape - weight and otherwise - than nontakers since they're not deficient in what the body needs, helping their bodies to digest, repair and keep in good shape way better compared to a person whose cells are deprived of these essential nurtrients.

Reminds me of people who say water makes them gain weight by expanding their stomach and so more room to fill food. I've heard that from more than one person believe it or not, but this tops even that.

I wouldn't take advice from a stick skinny person who was bound to gain weight by eating even a little bit more than usual, which could've been attributed to food choice, sedentary lifestyle and a host of other reasons. She could've started a diet at the same time she took the vitamins, starving herself then eating twice as much and putting on weight, very common.

What about the millions of others who haven't gained, only benefited from vitamins? But it's your choice.

You could be right. She did strike me as a sick woman... I don't know though. I mean, as it is, I am prone to being curvier, I just don't feel like taking too many chances here. I try to eat fruit every day and all.

My parents are docs and they've stuffed us (my sis and I) with pills when we were kids. I was sick a lot as a kid too. So when I grew up, I said "no more" and started evoiding taking pills. I'm not totally closed to the idea, I mean, I get really nasty periods at times and I do take ibuprofen to kill the pain. And when I get the flu and have temperature, I take antibiotics. Thanks Lord this usually happens very rarily - like once a year.

I've started taking bc pills last year, and I'm 25... I don't know, I simply don't trust the industry at all. I know that there are some good products on the market, I simply don't have access to the best info at the moment. So I don't completely reject the idea.

I think I'll PM you about that in a couple of weeks, it you're okey with it.

As for running, I've cheated today and took a very long walk and ran only half the time I'm used to... I needed to think. I changed the place where I usually run - less dogs, more wide space... easier to lose focus, I find...

Posted

Actually almost all my female friends who take BC pills say they gain average 10 pounds. The hormones make them eat as if they're on their period cravings...

also, almost all women who have breast cancer have been on bc with too much hormone buildup in the cancer cells in the breast so there are risks with a lot of pills. The last time I got sick was fourteen years ago and I too will avoid taking anything except antibiotics and asprin.

Whenever I go to the dentist he'll give me painkiller prescriptions. When I go to the doctor, I'll get antidepresent prescriptions, bc prescriptions, and a lot more. Doctors get incentives in the US from drug companies for giving out their medications so they are always with a pad in hand, ready to write something up. It's good not to get caught up into the pill-popping cycle.

Anyways back to the running. The environment is very important so once you try a few different locations, stick to the one that is most motivating and comfortable so you will look forward to the run, especially in the early stages when it can get tempting to stop all together.

After almost a year of regularly running it will become more of a habit and you won't give the location a second thought, but in the beginning, take care to do whatever it takes to keep on going!

Hey phillygirl63,

How long were you jogging before you started to lose weight. Did you jog everyday or every other day starting out?

Posted

I run 6.3 miles two to three times a week.

Running is very good for you but there are better things you can do to get firm legs.

I can run all day but a few minutes of leg presses get me way more results lol

Posted

sorry I wrote such a short post. I just don't like my legs and they don't seem to get much better through running. I'm an absolute gym-hater so running and swimming are the only things I do. I need to be outside :-)

Anyway, I can theoretically tell you that Pilates, Body-Pump or Body Forming would have a better effect on your legs than running.

I mean, competitive runners do have the best bodies (in my opinion) but I guess none of us will ever look like that :-)

I reckon running is just a very healthy thing to do! You're outdoors, fresh air (much better than in the horrible gym, where you get distracted by yucky smells and all sorts of annoying people) and I find running tougher than anything else, too.

Have fun :-)

Aaa, what's leg presses?

Posted

On a weight machine in the gym. You should incorporate lifting weights with your running.

the best thing Ive EVER done for the legs is HILLS and stairs. What I mean by hills is,..find a small slope and run up and down it until it hurts. Plain and simple. Then turn around and run up it backwards. Stairs is pretty much the same beneficially. Both of these activities works your butt too. I saw amazing results in just 3 weeks,..but you have to stick to it. I used to hate my butt. Now I squeeze it when no ones looking :o

I haven't read this entire thread (too long for my post-exam brain !!) but thought I would jump in anyway ;) Going to try to respond to a few of the things I read when I was skimming :)

I'm a triathlete so I swim/bike/run a lot. The combination of running and cycling for me has given me very strong legs. Of the two I'd say its actually probably more of the cycling thats done it ... but that might just be because I spend a LOT more time on my bike than I do running ?

Curly - good for you for discovering running ! I have always been a terrible runner and I used to HATE it ... I was forced to do it when I started doing triathlons tho and now its my favorite training ! Its so simple ... you just put your shoes on and go ! As a new runner you should never increase your totaly weekly mileage by more than 10% and be SURE to take at LEAST one day off entirely each week. Your body needs the rest !! Swimming is an excellent workout as well, (and admittedly, I sneak swims in on my recovery days!)! Just make sure you listen to your body and start off slowly !!

I don't eat any red meat either - I try to eat lots of whole grains and fruits and veggies. I probably have chicken or fish once or twice a week. I DO take a multivitamin tho ....

Now I want to go for a run .... !
