Frank2thepoint Posted August 26, 2015 Posted August 26, 2015 I've heard anecdotes and read stories about dating websites having fake profiles. The article I linked to below, which is specifically concerning Ashley Madison, has only 15% real women subscribers. The rest are fake profiles generated by third party companies, which even outsource some of the women from Eastern European countries, to perpetuate the charade. Regardless, I am absolutely sure other online dating sites pad their numbers with fake profiles and outsourced "potential dates" to keep up the appeal, and hopes of attracting more paid subscribers. So what's the point of this? Maybe a few people will read this and stop banking on online dating being the magic bullet for their romantic rut. There's no substitute for just talking to someone in person, if you happen to catch them on a good day that is. As Ashley Madison hack shock subsides customer anger at fake female profiles rises
Toodaloo Posted August 26, 2015 Posted August 26, 2015 Well Frank honey I guess it all boils down to guys trying their luck for a bit of tail and women being less promiscuous. Thats not new news... Thats general gender preferences. I bet half the blokes on there are only trying their luck rather than seriously contemplating an affair. Most men, if they can, will get as much sex as possible. Its nature. Its what men were programmed to do. Yes I know that its generalisation, but this has been known for generations. Real men are those who know how to control those urges and direct them to a more positive place. But wow. Ashley Madison really are getting a hell of a lot of publicity over all of this. being that they advertise for people to have affairs I wonder if it has not been orchestrated back at the office... I would never have heard of them before. Now I have... 1
Tobin Posted August 26, 2015 Posted August 26, 2015 Online dating is a great way to meet people despite all the scammers and fakes. Mrin Posted August 27, 2015 Posted August 27, 2015 Online dating is a great way to meet people despite all the scammers and fakes. I'm with my girl 4 years now, we met on OK Cupid and we couldn't be happier. Anyone who puts down OLD as an ineffective means to meet a person has only themselves to blame. I seem to be agreeing a lot with Tobin lately. But same here - I met a ton of women on OLD and even met my soulmate there. 13 months and counting. As for fakes, I've given this a lot of thought and I think these are where the fakes come from: 1. Inflation Fakes: No OLD has ever admitted this but I imagine there are some number of profiles that OLD sites use to "seed" or bolster a market. However, I don't think this is where the vast majority of fakes come from.... 2. Member Created Fakes: Christ, we tell people to do this all the time here on LS. These are easy to spot. There are about 3-4 professional/semi-professional photos of a good looking woman and a single paragraph of profile that is really nondescript. All other activities blah blah blah are also really nondescript. It looks like she spent 30 minutes on the profile. You can tell it is a Fake rather than a legit profile because the paragraph is written to be really broad and none of the preferences are filled out. These are fakes that members set up to simply spy on or "test" people they're dating. Any winks/emails to Member Fakes never result in a response unless you are the target of the spying. 3. Scam Fakes: They look just like #2 except that there are sexual overtones in the profile. Such as the "looking for" (casual dating) and age range (older and broader). These go to some sort of catfishing, sugar momma or prostitution service or individual. You can tell these from legit casual sexual profiles as legit profiles will have lots more text trying to screen out the avalanche of horny dudes. Any woman knows that if you put up even a semi-suggestive profile on an OLD site with good pics you will get absolutely bombarded. Any winks/emails to Scam Fakes will usually get a response unless your profile appears to be outside the target range (e.g. you look poor). 4. Idle Fakes: Anyone who has spent a year or so on OLD has seen these. They look like very legit profiles. They're always online. But they've been around forever! And nothing you do can generate a response. These are the most maddening. My guess is that they're from a variety of women: women who just like the attention, women who have insanely high standards, women who a serial daters, women who just are addicted to the passive experience of OLD and just like to browse, women that have some "flaw" that keeps them from ever being taken off the market (e.g. pics are different from RL) or they are just really complete Member Fakes. Anyhow, that's OLD fake-age according to Mrin. 1
d0nnivain Posted August 27, 2015 Posted August 27, 2015 I think Mrin summed it up. I think there is another set at least on e-harmony. You get matched with people who's subscription expired. For almost 6 months after my subscription expired I'd get at least weekly if not daily e-mails telling me I had new matched I just had to renew to see them. So they were sending my info to guys who I matched but if one contacted me he got no response because I was no longer a paying subscriber. 1
