It's one thing if it's a playful response to teasing like "Oh shut up".

 

But when someone actually tells someone to shut up, it's disrespectful IMO.

If someone is trying to watch something, it's actually quite rude to ignore what they obviously want to do, and to keep talking and interfering with their enjoyment.

 

It's rude to say 'shut up' to a point, but if you have ignored previous requests, or you know they want to watch something on TV, you probably might have deserved it....
