RoseVille
Is suicide on the rise, or am I just unfortunately aware of too many people who've taken their life? Just learned of another, second this week, fifth this summer.
cerridwen
I'm not aware of a state/national increase. Sometimes, I'll hear of a rash of teenagers throwing themselves in front of Caltrains on the Peninsula, but not lately. They try to limit news coverage so as to not encourage others. But it doesn't always work and these spates happen.
Tayla
seems to rise during the years where campaigning is involved. Stats by states can be found on the afsp org website. On avg it happens every 12-13 minutes. I tend to think some stats misguide though... as in states that carry the dignity to die... lump this into its information. They also list most suicides are mentally ill patients... again I tend to think some folks are actually painfully in tune to the insanity all around and choose to not be an enlisted victim. Sorry to hear how close to home it hits... a dear friend lost her son ... and my niece chose that avenue as well... Its hard to understand ...
Bubberfly
People have been killing themselves since there's been people. Media does have an impact as it is reported now rather than suicides being a "personal" thing, many people now know about it (and the unfortunate details as to how it was done). Suicides tend to have copycats as well. This is a natural human phenomenon, one person manages to "succeed" and those who are already prone to suicide ideation/depression/thoughts seem to think "oh hey! They can do it, so can I!" I wouldn't say it's on the rise. From the sounds of what you've mentioned it's "hitting home" for you, and I'm sorry you're going through this. Suicide always affects those left behind, and I always wonder if people who attempt/succeed knew how badly it hurts those around them if they would still do it.
Clarence_Boddicker
Have people been listening to: Better By You, Better Than Me more than usual?
baco
Really don't know, but to decrease it it's imperative to give access to (good) mental health care to all, stop stigmatizing mental ilness and as a society be educated about the warning signs of a potencial suicidal. There is in many places of the world the ideia that you can get through mental ilness by yourself, that if you don't you are just not strong enough, this very wrong ideia, makes people to not seek help, to hide, add some stressors, like the loss of a job, divorce, other health issues and you have the perfect storm. Haydn
The Nordic's seem to have a high suicide rate despite their apparent affluence. Must be those VAT numbers and the need to take out a 2nd loan for a 2nd round of drinks.
