I've been dating my boyfriend for over 6 months now and his mother's birthday is comming up. I would've just gotten her a card wishing her a happy birthday, except she (and my boyfriend's sister) got me a present for my birthday and I'm not sure if she expects one in kind. I don't want to start something, for example, my boyfriend may then feel it's expected of him to get my parent a birthday gift. It's unlikely that I'll see him or his mother on her birthday, but I'm still not sure on what I should do.

Thanks to all replies made :)

How about a card with a nice bouquet of flowers? Need not be over the top.

It's a nice gesture but not so extravagant that people feel the need to reciprocate.

Do it from kindness of your heart only with no expectations implied and it should be fine. :)

Thanks.

I'm never too sure with gift-giving, so this is brilliant advice :)

How about a pretty card with some roses? You could even give her a gift card to a place she enjoys. Simple but sweet.

Seeing as how she bought you something, I think you should get her something, as the above posters have suggested, flowers are good, or a box of chocolates or bottle of wine. Something simple.
