So this starts as a story. My gf and I are out with a mutual friend yesterday. The conversation turns to food. I mentioned a funny story where my gf downed a container of cookies by herself. It was kind of funny and amazing because she's very petite. Her friend chimes in that she can do one better and tells us a story about herself.

Later that night when we returned home all I heard from my gf was how she was pissed that I would intentionally embarrass her so badly and that it wasn't funny at all (she was laughing as I told the story). I tried to explain to her that it wasn't intended to be embarrassing and if she felt that way I apologized. Basically this is an ongoing issue though. I am very open (to an extent) and she thinks stories such as the above one should be kept in private. I try to explain to her its social protocol to tell funny stories about our lives otherwise imo stuff would be boring, you gotta laugh at things like this. I realize there is a line but I don't think this or other things I do cross it by any means.

Short of it, im debating whether or not she is compatible for me. I don't think either of us are going to change our opinions but I don't know the best way to go about it. We have been together for 3 years now and it seems like things are just getting worse. I can barely say anything without her getting annoyed/upset.

Wait until your kids start getting B's in school, or if they don't make the varsity squad. In all seriousness, life does throw some **** at you. I'm more like you, and I would find it difficult to have to live a Facebook type life, where everything is portrayed as GREAT!

Sounds like you are not compatible.

What you saw as funny and anecdotal she finds embarrassing. Also, it is best to tell stories about yourself, not others, just to avoid these types of situations.

If she's finding more and more things to get irritated about, or you're falling out more and more, it sounds as if any old excuse is being sought to bring this one to an end....

If things are going from bad to worse.... maybe it's best to end it before the s**t hits the f*n......

I agree with you. It's an issue with compatibility. With my boyfriend, humor is a big part of our relationship. We have a similar type of sense of humor, and neither of us take ourselves too seriously. We make fun of each other all the time both when we are by ourselves and when we are out with our friends. It's different with everyone. For some, humor is a big part of their life. For others, not so much. Also, people have different preferences in how they share their life experiences. It's not a matter of right or wrong to feel a certain way. So you are right on point when you say you two may not be compatible. Your girlfriend has the right to keep certain things between you private and not wrong to feel embarrassed when those things are revealed to others. Since you wrote this is an "ongoing" issue, I am assuming that what you wrote was one example of many other similar instances? So you might want to think about how important this aspect of compatibility (e.g., types of sense of humor, with whom to share) is to you while weighing in all the other aspects of compatibility (values, beliefs, trust, life style, etc).
