Bobbi7 Posted July 12, 2015 Posted July 12, 2015 Someone asked me what I do for fun. I replied, that I liked to work-out and stay active, then I felt silly for saying that...
casey.lives Posted July 12, 2015 Posted July 12, 2015 being specific might help: i like to jog or play tennis 2
Bubberfly Posted July 12, 2015 Posted July 12, 2015 People who think "working out" as a hobby sounding silly are people who don't work out. Personally, I do work out so if you told me this you'd get an "oooooh, what do you do? Crossfit? Weights? Blah blah blah?" I'm always excited to meet people who enjoy fitness like myself I wouldn't stress out. Working out can be a hobby. You can spend many hours working on it, you can "perfect" things, you can work toward a goal = hobby 2
Brigit_1 Posted July 12, 2015 Posted July 12, 2015 Someone asked me what I do for fun. I replied, that I liked to work-out and stay active, then I felt silly for saying that... No need to feel silly. Working out is a great hobby. 1
ScotchBeef Posted July 12, 2015 Posted July 12, 2015 I'd consider it a hobby. I think it's defined as something you do in your spare time for pleasure/enjoyment. Working out is tough, and can be tiring and even painful, but knowing you spent your day productively working towards a goal (whether that be weight loss/strength/fitness) is certainly enough to fill me with pleasure. 1
loveweary11 Posted July 12, 2015 Posted July 12, 2015 If scrapbooking canbe considered a hobby, I'm pretty sure you're safe saying working out is as well. 3
Ninjainpajamas Posted July 12, 2015 Posted July 12, 2015 I think it's fair to say it's a hobby, yes. Not something that would jump out to me as a hobby like playing the guitar or something like that as it's more to do with a lifestyle choice than just a hobby, but it's an interest/hobby, kind of the same difference. 2
lino Posted July 13, 2015 Posted July 13, 2015 I enjoy working out but wouldn't consider it a hobby. More a routine thing like having a shower or doing laundry. I've been doing it for so long now it's second nature to me 3
S_A Posted July 13, 2015 Posted July 13, 2015 Yes it's totally a hobby. For some, it might be something they do to make themselves better at hobby that does not involve the gym. 1
No Limit Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 It's becoming my lifestyle too. For now I only do it every 2 days, but once college starts in September I intend to do more (also because in the city I have a lot more options than in the country) - gonna take up ballet training again and see if there's a kickboxing group for women somewhere. I've also found a neat-looking treadmill in the internet. I don't think saying "working out" sounds lame. And if someone hints that they think it is then explain it a little more what exactly you're doing - although personally I'd have to say "Ah you know, basic exercises and whatever I can grab from YouTube fitness videos!"... 1
PogoStick Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 Yes working out is fine, but surely you have other interests. Otherwise, that's not much for a mate to connect with. 2
RoseVille Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 I enjoy working out and eating healthy. That's not a hobby, that's a lifestyle. It's as important as brushing your teeth and taking a shower. 2

Ooo I like that. So Imagine when asked about hobbies and interests if your date responded "I like to take a shower and brush my teeth daily". Certainly not going to make any panties wet or raise any flag poles. 1
Grumpybutfun Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 Working out, to me, is a lifestyle choice....however, many hobbies have resulted from it. My hobbies include MMA participation and tournaments, marathons, races, various bike races, Iron Man Competitions. Tough Mudder races, extreme sports challenges, and a weightlifting club. However, I workout everyday and am usually in training so that I can participate in my hobbies. G 2

I have hobbies that were borne of fitness (IronMan, snowboarding, kayaking) but I wouldn't call "working out," which to me is the base of a healthy lifestyle, a hobby. Fitness/bodybuilding competition could be, I suppose. But just "going to the gym," no. 1
introverted1 Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 I see staying fit as a lifestyle choice, but working out is a hobby. I choose to lift weights as my workout, and for me it meets the definition of hobby in that there is skill progression and enjoyment. I like to eat healthfully, too, and that's another lifestyle choice. Cooking is my hobby in that arena. I think the best hobbies are the ones that support a lifestyle choice.
