So a guy friend of mine and I are kind of having a little date night tonight. I am cooking us dinner. I have no idea what to make. I was thinking of making an Italian dish that is delicious, but didn't know if a heavy pasta dish is the way to go. Plus, if we end up kissing, which will most likely happen, we could both have bad Italian breath. Then I was thinking of making a vegetable pizza. Really easy once I assemble it, then he and I can hangout while it bakes. Opposed to the other Italian meal which I will have to constantly watch and prepare. Or my last option was doing a breakfast for dinner. I was thinking delicious crepes with fruit inside and whipped cream. I thought that might be more romantic, but less dinner time. I figured maybe I would save the breakfast for actual breakfast, since sometimes he stays over with me and I have yet to feed him breakfast. Any date food opinions?

Don't worry about garlic breath, if both of you eat the same thing you won't notice anything. It's when one has garlic and the other doesn't that it becomes an issue.

On a first home cook meal I go simple yet nice. Usually I prepare salmon with dill it's 20 minutes in the oven, a little sauce, a salad with a little sweet to it like apple and dried cranberry in it, fresh baguette and butter and Voilà! maybe steamed veggies but really unnecessary if the salad is consistant. I don't make rice on purpose so we don't feel like falling asleep after dinner. If you mix starch and protein that's what happens.

I was thinking maybe chicken or shrimp scampi (over pasta with the lemon garlic butter sauce) with a side salad. And then berries and cream for dessert?

Men are simple.....meat wrapped in bacon, potatoes, and beer. They don't give a rat's ass about fancy fru fru so don't knock yourself out. for breakfast....bacon, eggs, coffee.

Go with simple for the first meal. I assume you know his likes/dislikes. If you don't, you should ask. Italian is a safe bet though.

A rookie mistake from my past:

Me: Do you like spicy food?

Her: I love spicy food! The hotter the better.

Me: Alright.

Her: *Starts crying after the first spoonful*

I like the breakfast idea. BF makes me breakfast quite a lot, brings me coffee in bed and all that. It's sweet. :) Plus it doesn't have to be time-consuming or complicated like smackie said.

Boil his family's pet rabbit . . . :)

The first time I cooked for my SO, I broiled a nice, juicy T-Bone steak, served it with a baked potatoe, corn on the cob and french green beans. And for dessert . . . me topped with whipped cream. You can't go wrong with a nice piece of . . .

Cook something you enjoy that you know how to make. I would wait on the breakfast for dinner thing though.

I always ask favorite dishes.

If he deflects it and puts it back on me and asks what I want to make instead of giving real input, I HATE it so much and give a red mark on his permanent record. (haha)

Italian is good if you don't have input. Easy and most people don't hate it.

I don't boil rabbits :) What I do do is make steam . . .

My never fail meal:

Filet mignon or prime rib or roast (for all budgets)

Mashed potatoes

Fresh green beans

Red wine

Homemade pie

Every guy I made this meal for proposed!

Do find out any dietary restrictions, and adjust. If none, the above meal is a home run!

Is it summer where you are? I vote for panzanella and a basic quality meat recipe, like this one. Panzanella is a wonderful way to capture all the amazing flavors of the season. Italian Food Forever is my favorite archive of Italian recipes on the internet, but some of them are very advanced. Other consistently good recipe archives are at Food52 and Serious Eats. I find Epicurious and Saveur to be hit or miss, but there are plenty of good ones there too.

As for "men are simple": you never know! My boyfriend made me a four-course meal for Valentine's Day including lobster tail with saffron beurre blanc, lemon foam over oysters and sous vide venison. His idea of simple cooking at home usually involves liquid nitrogen and tapioca maltodextrin! I'm just happy so long as he doesn't set off the smoke alarm.

A man likes to eat. Go with something substantial like the ideas you are having. You could also ask what he likes.

I know I enjoy asking people what their favorite meal is, then making it better than they've ever had it. :D

Pro Tip: Breath only matters if you eat *different* meals. If you both eat the same, breath is not noticeable.

PS: I think girls with good, strong garlic breath are hot. I'm not like, "gross!" I'm like (said in a sexy voice...) "hey babe.... what did *you* have to eat?" Yum! :lmao:
