What makes a person cheap is the inability to indulge himself with simple pleasures. Just as they are unable to indulge themselves, they will not indulge you with simple pleasures. Not on his time. Not on his money.

Cheap is also controlling. Cheap people don't really love themselves - not enough to pay their own money for themselves. I genuinely doubt they can truly love other people.

Cheap is not smart with money. Cheap is not looking for the better investment. Cheap is simply taking the lowest cost option, irrelevant of what it is that they are buying and of its importance - to both themselves - or you. Cheap is a way of being. Cheap is never about money. It's like cancer, deeply spread in every cell of that being... incurable.

So very well said and perfectly on point! :bunny:

This is a great point. I'm good with money, but not cheap, because being cheap actually costs *more* in many cases!

Example: When buying loafers, I nearly always buy Prada or Gucci. These shoes are made very well and last many years. I could buy a $100 cheap pair, but because they are made so poorly in comparison, I would spend *more* money by being cheap, as i buy pair after pair when they fall apart.

Many things in life are like this. Smart people buy for maximum value no matter what the cost. They also pay cash/liquid not credit. ;)

"Se costa poco, costa caro."

If it's cheap (inexpensive) it will cost you more."

Once saw a lady who had actually brought a calculator for that.

poor math is a dealbreaker to begin with.

For me cheap is when someone stands at a register when they're buying coffee for the two of you and pays for theirs separately, leaving you to buy your own.

It goes beyond cheap and just smacks of deliberate vileness. A bit like if you had a friend round and you went to make yourself a cup of coffee without offering them one.

'Cheap' is also a definition of a specific look...isn't it?

I remember the wonderful Dolly Parton coming out on stage, huge bouffant wig, false eyelashes, a white 'Elvis' type suit studded with rhinestones and shoes that would have crippled most women, but she wore with expert ease....

(You'll have to imagine her trademark drawl....)

"Hi everyone! Hi!! How do y'all like mah new look?!"

(Raptuous applause and deafening cheering)

as the noise subsides, she declares -

"It takes a whole lotta dollars to look this cheap!"

(massive laughter....)

IN the UK we have the classic 'Essex' look, both for guys and gals...

here's one....

and another, typifying behaviour...

And let's not forget the lads....

(it's good that these images don't smell, because you'd pass out at the excessive use of perfume/cologne...)

I remember that night well. A lovely pair of girls!(Braintree i believe)

Cheap for me is again when someone offers to pay nothing, ever.

My ex was this person but back then i had a blind spot and a peanut for a brain.

A lot of this is just scorekeeping. Making sure I don't do one ounce more than my partner.

Scorekeeping is HIGHLY unattractive.

"Cheap" is also an attitude.

Cheap women flaunt and put it about. They are the ones who would have their knickers round their ankles for a couple of Tia Marias...

Cheap men are the ones who show no consideration for others and have a lack of scruples and morals...

Perhaps "tacky" would be a better word for it?

I can't really answer this tough question the way it was raised ,but what i consider not cheap was 18 year ago , when we didn't care about what we eat so sometimes we ate bagels or in a fancy restaurant ;now I am sure we are both cheap when we try to escape the bill !

I've seen this too. What really surprises me is that anyone needs a calculator for American tipping.

You just move the decimal and double the amount.

56.00 check. Slide decimal to left. 5.60, now double that... $11.20 is your tip +/- for service level.

What if you're only prepared to tip 15%, based on a statistical analysis of your income vs. discretionary spending vs. quality of date? :p

Tip karma trumps all. :p

Then there is tipping to get a seat when it's sold out or VIP...

Good tippers get more action. ;):bunny:

That's true. If I see a guy go large for a server like 50%, it bodes well for them with me. :) Not so much a matter of being a moneybags or looking good by association, just being gracious with ppl out there making their living scores big with me. (Assuming you can afford it.)

Great explanation.

I'm a guy who likes his "worldly pleasures". Good food, good booze, good weed, good sex. I'll happily drop $100 on a bottle of scotch, or $60 on authentic sushi for my GF and I, or another $60 on bedroom accessories, or $100 on some good smoke.

On the flip side, I drive a basic fuel efficient Kia. I don't have to keep up with the Jones's. I don't spend thousands on a huge TV I don't need when the 8 year old one I already have works just fine. I buy nice clothes, but I don't need to shop at A&F when the Men's Wearhouse will do just fine.

I don't skimp on shoes though. I want them suckers to last and to get some mileage out of them.

I budget and watch my money very carefully. Right after I got divorced it was a necessity just to keep my house. Now I'm making a lot more money so it's not nearly as important. But it's just a habit I fell into and can't shake.

When I go out or take my GF out, I don't want money to be an obstacle. It's about the memory and the fun, not the money.

I never go crazy though. If I say "I've got $200 to spend", then that's what I've got to spend. I always have more in the bank, but I set my limit and stick to it. I think that's just being a responsible adult.

I've never paid much attention to this. Do women peak at the bill as the man fills out the totals?

I'm thinking of cash examples, like at a bar.
