If he turned round and said something along the lines of "I am sorry but I wish to give this lovely lady opposite me my undivided attention but good luck in finding some participants" I would be cool If he were rude to her in any way I would be ready to leave. Manners are important to me.

If I were on a date, and that happened, I would have thought it was hysterical and I'd be curious to know what the survey was about too. Maybe she worked for Match.com and was surveying how you and your date met. I dunno, maybe I'm different but I would have been totally cool with it, turned it into something fun! We could have laughed about it afterwards. smg, you sound uptight. Lighten up dude...have some fun! No wonder you rarely get second dates...

You have absolutely no way of knowing that. Not in the least because you never heard the survey girl out so you have no idea what her purpose of approaching you was. If I'd been your date, I would have left letting you sit there by your high and mighty self.
