So, a woman's "looks" is a deciding factor if a guy will go over to talk to her?

Being attractive is number #1, while later interests and hobbies come WAY later. Let's say..I had shared similar interests with a guy-that wouldn't make him want to date me because of a similar interest, if the guy didn't find me attractive-then he wouldn't bother wanting to date me. Is this how it works?

I think this is why some women don't like the cold approach. Because they know that the ONLY reason the guy came to see her was only because of how she looks and not her personality.

It's taken me too long to figure out that looks really are far and away the #1 factor in men's attraction to women.

A beautiful woman with few to no redeeming qualities of character and personality will get far more attention, love, and investment from men than an average woman with exceptional qualities. In the free market of romantic love, beauty is the most prized female commodity by far.

Women also tend to value looks in men for casual sex, but in general women give more careful consideration to other factors when choosing a partner for dating or love/marriage. Generally, men prioritize looks for casual sex, dating, and love/marriage. They're more willing to let looks slide for casual sex and even dating, not as much for love/marriage.

If I had a daughter, I would teach her to make the best of the exterior to reel in the men, and cultivate the interior so she has the intelligence and insight to choose wisely and take care of herself if anything goes awry.

Yes, that is how it works. Especially because you don't express your interests in a way that "first sight" could spot in a crowd; unless you are for example in the punk or gothic scene and dress in their style. But beside from that, no one can see character etc from just a glance.
