LookAtThisPOst Posted May 8, 2015 Posted May 8, 2015 Me and a friend discussed restaurants and I talked about how I have met a lot of people and women when it comes to dating, that avoid chain restaurants like the plague. His response was that only the pretentious types would think such things and one should attend a restaurant, chain or not, as long one thinks the food is good regardless of it's type. Anyone?
Diezel Posted May 8, 2015 Posted May 8, 2015 I avoid chain restaurants like the plague, and I'm male. That food is NOT good. But hey, if you like frozen food re-heated, go for it. 10
xxoo Posted May 8, 2015 Posted May 8, 2015 I don't think it's pretentious to dislike chain restaurants. It's like eating an overpriced tv dinner. Huge waste of money for food that is microwaved. I'd assume we have different ideas of "good food". 10
CarrieT Posted May 8, 2015 Posted May 8, 2015 Nothing pretentious about liking decent, wholesome food cooked from fresh ingredients. I am a professional food writer and 99% of the chain restaurants prepare food that comes frozen. There are a few exceptions, but they are rare and tend to be on the small size; i.e., limited to local cities or regions vs. nationwide. I personally can't think of a large chain restaurant worth eating at.... 10
preraph Posted May 8, 2015 Posted May 8, 2015 I mostly don't like chain restaurants, but I do like a couple: Abuelo's and Texas Roadhouse. I don't care if it's pretentious or not. If I like the food, I'll eat there. 3
losangelena Posted May 8, 2015 Posted May 8, 2015 I love a 2:00 am McNugget run as much as anyone, but I tend to avoid chain restaurants, especially for dates. I can understand if that's all there is in the area, but where I live, there are a myriad of restaurants that serve better, better-tasting food, that aren't necessarily any more expensive than a chain. Like, if I want to get fajitas, I'm gonna go to an authentic Mexican restaurant, and not Chili's. I wouldn't call it pretentious (of course, I'm biased though), it's just a matter of taste. My parents felt the same way, so it's just something I'm used to. 1
Fhsjkfjrhsdh3646 Posted May 8, 2015 Posted May 8, 2015 I'll avoid chain restaurants for early dates, i'd rather pick something that is unique. 6
Tayla Posted May 8, 2015 Posted May 8, 2015 I eat where the budget allows and the food meets my dietary needs. definitely not a food snob. Once had a soup from Paneras that was divine. Worked with a Chef for two years. He used fresh, frozen and sometimes leftovers to create new meals. Pretty sure it made no difference to the guests, they found his creations worthy of repeat business. Same philosophy in the "chain" industry. Some things are cost effective to use any of the above resources. 2
mammasita Posted May 8, 2015 Posted May 8, 2015 I dunno, I love me some Ruth's Chris steak, BLOODY pls. Not all chains are terrible. Carraba's, Red Robin.....YUMMMMMM 4

Carraba's, Red Robin.....YUMMMMMM Yes, agree....Carrabas is a rather good quality chain restaurant. I would go there repeatedly. Beats out Olive Garden BIG time.
Phoe Posted May 8, 2015 Posted May 8, 2015 I come from a place where you either eat at a chain, or you eat at home. Doesn't really make a difference to me, but I mostly eat at home anyway.
loveweary11 Posted May 8, 2015 Posted May 8, 2015 I'm so pretentious that I hardly will eat meals out because restaurants mostly make lousy food. If I do eat out, it's usually local farm to table or seafood. This isn't a joke. I'm probably one of the biggest food snobs you'd ever meet. My kitchen produces food better than well over 95% of all restaurants. Cooking and perfecting things in the kitchen is a hobby of mine I used to share with the ex. I still do it. 2
loveweary11 Posted May 8, 2015 Posted May 8, 2015 Carraba's, Ate at one of these once while stuck waiting for a flight. Enough salt in the fake Italian food to kill an elephant. 1
havocser Posted May 8, 2015 Posted May 8, 2015 It's not pretentious to like good quality food instead of microwaveable crap.. Lol I personally run when a guy suggests a place like Original Joes or something like that. I prefer supporting local restaurants not only because they're local but the food has more thought put into it. 1
gaius Posted May 8, 2015 Posted May 8, 2015 I dated a girl like that one time, and we still ended up at Panera or Ruby Tuesdays from time ti time. As long as she's willing to be flexible when circumstance dictates I don't see a problem. 1
Phoe Posted May 8, 2015 Posted May 8, 2015 I suppose one of the reasons I don't care about eating a chain's, is because I'm not there for the food, I'm there for the people I'm with. I eat out maybe 6-7 times a year, to see family. I can't even tell you what I ordered the last time I ate out, I wasn't particularly fussed with the menu, but I remember the fun time I had with family. Otherwise, I prefer to eat at home. It's cheaper and I have more control over the ingredients and portions. 1
Breezee Posted May 8, 2015 Posted May 8, 2015 There are sooo many really good restaurants where I live I would hope that my date would take me to one of them instead of a chain. I don't mind chains but reserve that for going with a friend. 2
smackie9 Posted May 8, 2015 Posted May 8, 2015 I like going to ethnic restaurants because you get food that is unique and made with fresh ingredients. I can't stand the usual grind of burgers/ north american food. Vancouver BC and the lower mainland rawks for good eateries. It's a mix of Indian/Asian/Jamaican/etc the seasoning/spices/ flavours are out of this world. Going to a place like that says to me you are "adventerous" and open to experiencing new and different things. OK now I'm really hungry....time for dinner lol.
sweetjasmine Posted May 8, 2015 Posted May 8, 2015 I don't think it's pretentious. I also avoid chain restaurants like the plague, unless it's something like grabbing a quick salad from Panera or a fast lunch from Chipotle or whatever. At the sit-down chains, the food is incredibly salty, and, yes, you can tell when something's been frozen. When I was younger, I couldn't tell the difference, but it's usually pretty obvious now. I'll still eat at a chain if that's where the group I'm with is headed, but if I had to choose, I'd pick a local restaurant any time. Still have bad memories of the post-grad dinner at Macaroni Grill where the dish I got was so salty that I felt sick for hours afterwards. 4
Rejected Rosebud Posted May 8, 2015 Posted May 8, 2015 It's not pretentious!!! Why would you think that? I don't like chain anything, I like to eat out and shop local and support local businesses anyplace I go, I don't care to eat food that has been processed and traveled on a truck from who knows where, and I can also cook much better than what you can get at a chain if I do say so myself!! :) 1

Good point. This is actually a good litmus test to figure out the character of the person who. 1. Goes for the the enjoyment of the company. 2. Whines about the food and doesn't give a crap about the company. If it's #2, I launch. 1

If I'm paying, peop can eat good food in a healthy place that supports local families instead of corporations. If i were forced to go to one of these places, I'd just get a drink and chat. 1
