How many of you have gotten a promise ring from your partner? What does it mean? Are you still with that person?

Posted

Unless you’re 12 I really don’t understand the promise ring? I promise to, string you along, screw you over, chew you up and spit you out!

Posted

It means "I am not really ready to commit to you through engagement, but I don't want you to leave or have you pressure me to marry you, so here's a ring to shut you up."

I had one when I was in high school.

I didn't know they were still around.

In high school, I think they mean I promise you whatever you want while we are still in lust with each other.

As an adult, I cant begin to imagine what they would mean.

How long have you both been dating? How serious is the relationship? Honestly I've never known any guy that's given one to his GF.

i like promise rings...shows to me something beautiful...which is to promise.....promise is a commitment.....a promise ring no less a commitment if you believe in promises......i dont think age is a factor in making a promise so i dont believe a promise ring should be age derived...i think they are cool...and i am not a teen far from it..deb

My experience, they are for those very young, very southern, and usually very religious.

My husband and I were both virgins so both wore promise rings. I moved mine to my left ring finger from my right ring finger when we started dating exclusively. He did the same. I guess that is a promise ring in a sense. I think it is a good idea so that other men can see you are not available anymore.

Honey, some men still hit on you if you are wearing a Wedding ring. Some silly promise ring isn't going to deter most people. I wouldn't even know what one looked like.

I didn’t have a promise ring. I also didn't have an engagement ring, it was me that choose not to have an E-ring.

Me and my husband only wear one ring, and that is our matching wedding gold band.

Back then, when my Hubby keeps talk about marriage, so I talk it with him and we decided to get married.

We went ring shopping together, and we choose the plain wedding band. Both of us wear it on our left hand even before we got married.

And we used this simple matching band rings that we both been wearing, turn it to our “wedding rings” on that day we got married.

I don't know what it called in our situation; promise ring, couple ring, wedding ring, it doesn't matter. What matter is two people commitment to each others.

We ended up married at the simple City Hall/Courthouse wedding ceremony with 2 witnesses. We still married, and still together and still happy.

No, we not dirt poor. He have 2 jobs and I have 1 job, I just didn't want a wedding.

Ms. OP, if a promise ring is MEANINGFUL between you and partner, then who cares what other thinks. I wish all the happiness and all the best of luck to you and your partner.

Him and I did talk about the promise ring last night, I was thinking of telling him what type of ring I am interested in, I always liked the different shape rings like one's with a heart, butterfly, or flower shape.

Not a fan of the regular diamond shapes, but I remember my ex's got me similar engagement rings, one gave me a heart and the other gave me a heart and then changed it to a bat hehe.

I don't want to repeat something that happened in the past with my ex into the present with my current guy but again I like those shapes, what should I do?

I've never gotten a promise ring, but I understand it as maybe something teenagers give as a pre-engagement ring since most are too young to seriously consider marrying.

As an adult though, I don't really see the function of a promise or pre-engagement ring.

How many promise rings have you received?

What kind of promises did they represent? If you have so many, it doesn't sound like these rings represent a commitment or engagement.

My ex from 2007 got me a heart shaped engagement ring not a promise ring, and my ex from 2011 got me a butterfly ring then changed it to a bat ring both meant a engagement ring not a promise ring.

My daughter's bf gave her a Claddagh ring. I think it's sweet :) They are mid-twenties and still establishing their careers and undertaking post-grad studies. They've been together for four years, but are still way too young and not at all ready life stage wise (IMO and theirs) to be ready for a commitment as big as forever. But they are committed as they can be right now; and that's what the ring symbolises.
