You know, I was watching "The Departed" late Sunday nite and I love(d) that movie. I saw "The Gambler" Saturday and couldn't quite get into it like the Departed...

Anywho, funny how when you watch things a 2nd time or so you see things you missed the first time around.

There was a scene where douchey Matt Damon's character was responding to Alec Baldwin's question on how his plans for the marriage were going.

Well, Baldwin was telling him how getting married is good for his career. How other women will get excited to see him able to commit to a woman, having kids will show that his penis works, and no one will ever think he's gay.

Also, Damon's character was a major douche. He was all about himself, I could see where he'd just marry cuz it would be of benefit to him. I mean, there was a scene in the movie where his gf (wife to be) was moving in and she wanted to put up pictures of her family, herself, etc, her diplomas and stuff and he said 'no, cuz of the way he wanted the condo to look and didn't want visitors coming over and seeing any of her pictures'.

Geesh, I mean, like IMO, high society peeps and politicians usually get married to portray a false image to get people on their side, but freakin' everyday people too?

It's a movie. Baldwin's character is just that, a fictional character.

People marry for a variety of reasons, but studies have shown that in the US, romantic love continues to rise as the primary reason people marry. That is to say, most Americans marry because they love and respect their partners and want to build a life with them, not out of self-serving reasons such as the ones stated above.

If someone you know is getting married, they're likely doing so out of love for their partner.

Despite Kamille's survey studies, where I'm sure everyone is totally honest and would admit I'm just marrying this guy because my family approves , most do still let what other people think influence their romantic choices way too much. =/ It's unfortunate really but what are you going to do. There just aren't that many people out there who are strong enough to truly not care and just go with what they really want.

I don't think Damon's character was a total douche though. He basically told her she had to get out if it wasn't right for her, which was a pretty selfless act.

I'm sure your opinion is a lot more valid than a tradition of studies dedicated to figuring out how to minimize biases and maximize honest answers. Really, who needs science?

Really? I think its pretty easy to throw huge like it or lump it ultimatums around.

Id think flexiabity and an ability to compromise would point to a more selfless person.

but I haven't seen the film so I don't know the context!
