I'm in a boatyard right now. Finishing up the new boat. For years, people have been respectful of my building. All of a sudden, I just caught 3 different Canadian jerks this week rifling through my shop looking to take things.

These people aren't poor. They have 40ft-50ft boats, worth $200,000 and up. They use their boat as a winter home to go sailing in the Caribbean. Then they store the boats here for the summer to return to Canada to relax in their main home up there while the weather is nice.

So they decide they need a tool or a scrap of this or that and they walk RIGHT INTO MY BUILDING where my boat is being finished and start rummaging through everything.

I caught 3 of them this week because I'm now in the boat and can hear them.

There are notices in the common building with laundry and showers and stuff not to trespass in rented spaces. There are no trespassing notices up at the entrance to my building. (building doesn't close... like an open garage)

What else can I do??

These people seem to think my boat shop is a place to just go grab whatever thet need!

All of them are more wealthy than me and yet they take things from my shop!!?!

I'm irate.

Any advice apart from waiting for them to go to Canada, then taking whatever I want from their boats purely for revenge??

This is where the generational thing cones in for me. Only a baby boomer steals from a younger, less well off person. Trying to keep an open mind, but I've had a lot of bad experiences with that age group doing things like this.

You can try installing a couple of those game trail motion activated cameras that snap digital photos, when motion activated.

Or you could install an inexpensive motion activated noise maker. Try putting up a few signs warning that the premises are under video surveillance too.

These may help keep them honest and discourage further trespassing.

That might be a good idea. Running out of cash finishing the boat, but maybe some fake cameras/signs.

I tried to edit out my baby boomer comment, but can't now. It was out of rage. I take it back.

I was hoping I could somehow discourage them socially.

I mean, they are literally my neighbors.

Where I come from, you don't enter other people's spaces.

PS: I like your center console btw.

Thanks! I have been going nuts for the last three weeks because the seas have been just to crappy to push offshore to my usual fishing grounds.

I know what you mean with people who would not normally steal things. But my fellow boaters are notorious for "taking" things at the marina that I launch my boat from. I literally have to lock down everything on my trailer before heading out.

How far out do you have to go?

I'm a sailing guy who can't afford his mast and sails for about another year. Damn quote for mast and sails was $48 grand. Hopes vanished I could sail her this year. Guess I'll be motoring around for a while. :o:(

If it gets out that you're a loose cannon and unpredictable, that can keep unwelcome types off the property. Probably not a good idea in rented space but I fly the stars and stripes and post my range targets as 'art'. Works pretty good. Customers even feel inclined to pay, as they should. I'd love a world where people don't try to beg, borrow or steal whatever they can get away with, but live with what is. It works.

I typically run out around to around 35 to 50 miles on good weather days. I am looking to break my record sometime this summer and push her out to the Florida Middle Grounds, 90 miles one way.

I love sailboats, and have always wanted to live on one for the summer months someday. That is a hefty sum for a mast and sails! You know BOAT is not really a word, it is actually an acronym and stands for: Bust-Out- Another-Thousand.:lmao:

That's cool. I just Googled the Florida Middle Grounds. What do you catch out there?

Boy, do I hear that. Built this one from scratch. It's a very high performance catamaran. The materials costs were blistering.

I could have built 3 basic houses for the same time and $$.

But it launches within a month, sans mast and sails, so it's a very exciting time.

You can put together a wireless 3-5 camera security system for under $150 with a free PC based recorder. If you don't have a PC for this add the cost of a cheap used notebook.

You know, that's exactly the strategy i took early on.

Made sure to mention my guns, shooting thieves, etc.

These people were new, I think. The ones that I know have never come in to look around unless invited. They stand beyond the building to chat, then only come in when invited.

I guess I only have a month left here. I could just keep yelling at them....

I'm a baby boomer and I hate thieves. I don't blame you for being mad. It's just that rich entitlement, not because they're from my generation. But yes, if there is a motion sensor that emits an alarm, that would be great. If you find such a thing, let me know. I've not found anything like that. i think for me at home it would be a great thing to have a "panic button" I could push that would sound a loud outside alarm blast. Didn't find anything like that. That way I could scare strangers off who were at the door. They say never don't answer the door because they could be casing the house to break in and will then break in, but I'm not opening the door to some stranger who might be a thug. So a big foghorn would be great.

I never mention anything. LEO training. Mentioning firearms can be construed to be assault with the threat of battery, at least in my jurisdiction. Yes, new people show up all the time. Bible thumpers I especially have fun with. When gas got expensive, fewer people stopped by. Now that it's cheaper again, it's started up again. People always want something. Human nature I guess, even when they're rich. Perhaps they didn't get rich by being generous, eh? Pretty typical. Most of my deadbeat customers are the wealthiest ones.

Carhill, has a great point about hanging used targets from the shooting range. That always makes me wonder about the person that put up such visual markers.

I hope you will post some photos of her in your album section here when you launch. I supposed you did your own glass work too?

The main reason for us on the shallow side of the Gulf to head to FMG, is Red Snapper. But we catch monster Amberjack, Grouper (all varieties), monster Mangrove snapper, Hogfish and Mahi. Truly a seafood market out there.

This is FL. :lmao:

Stand your ground and whatnot. :D

You can mention in casual conversation that you are a gun owner and that you, "don't want to shoot anyone in the middle of the night mistaking them for thieves." You can't say," I'll shoot you" or make threats, but you can make it known that you're a little nuts.

And I know what you mean. Some of the most wealthy are the worst clients. Same with both of my businesses (boat is a business).

I know. I'm sorry.

I took it back in a later post. I couldn't edit out the baby boomer bashing in time.

I feel bad.

Actually, I can't put pics of the boat up. I'm kind of internet famous regarding that and the boat is extremely recognizable. I could show you privately....

And yes, I took part in and directed the first 2 years of the build. The important stuff people's lives depend on. We vacuum resin infused everything. Hulls, connectives, etc. Boat is Core cell, glass and epoxy. Very strong and light. 20 knots+ under sail, no motor on.

I also am here for the final part of the build... engines, steering, ground tackle, etc...

Ever hear of the term "Misers"?

I mean, Chris Rock makes a lot of jokes bout "wealthy" vs "rich" people.

Just cuz people have money, doesn't mean they wanna spend it all. Some are "misers". They are so obsessed with money and/or wealth, they take advantage of others to make and keep it.

I used to tutor for this woman and they had money, but always wanna talk you down for your fees. She did that with everyone. The maid, the tutor, etc.

I was watching this show where this rich guy got killed by one of his children. He kept everyone on a tight "allowance" when it came to money - even his wife. But for some reason he spoiled one daughter in particular. And I think she was the one who ended up killing him (cuz she was spoiled, greedy, brat).

Or, it could be that it has to do with them being Canadian?

Lol, sarcasm aside:laugh:, I agree with the motion sensored cameras.

I didn't mean to make you think I'm offended. I'm much thicker skinned than that! Just saying it is probably more about entitlement.

CCTV for a start, though I realise it will probably cost.

Word spreads and when one guy knows what's available somewhere he probably talks to his mates, hence the epidemic.

I think you need to look at security, maybe get the local police security advice person to come and visit and give you some ideas.

Worryingly, I don't think things like this are a coincidence. They could be doing the old 'casing the joint'. I would up your security as quickly as possible and maybe see if there are any night patrols going on who would pay more attention to your boatyard area for a while.

Hope it all works out OK for you. I can see how annoying/worrying this might be. These people are obviously dubious because any decent person would contact the owner and ask if they had any tools/parts they could buy, not just walk in and take.
