I don't think many people would appreciate being added as a friend out of pity. That's awfully condescending.

 

 

Being beautiful and having lots of friends on FB or social media does not mean a thing. I know several women like that. They were putting on a show the whole time. When you saw them in person, it was clear how miserable they were. It sounds like this "unattractive" woman of yours is secure enough in herself to not care how popular she is. Believe it or not she may even be happy. Maybe she doesn't care about looks as much as you do.
