They can work if the people know there will be an end. Also if the people do have real opportunities to see each other. One of my BFFs from here in the Northeast met a man 5 years ago while on vacation in Florida. He's from Texas. They are getting married next month but they were lucky in that they got to spend at least one weekend every two months together on average.

They do take work & trust. There is also a BIG difference between people who have met IRL & those spinning a fantasy with a stranger over the internet.

They can and do work but as I've said a million times on here, you BOTH have to want it and work at it every day. And even more importantly, you have to have met in real life before you can even think to call it a relationship!

Tread carefully OP.

Agreed. They absolutely can work and can even work on a semi-permanent basis depending on the ages involved. That being said, it takes a very strong bond and relationship to work. A weak in person relationship can sputter along indefinitely. A weak LDR is gone before it even started. Even a moderately strong LDR stands a slim chance.

Well yes, if they're for periods shorter than a year, and you can visit each other during them, it will work... But it seems like a lot of people get into them with no foreseeable end, and they are too broke to visit each other.. Lol.
