When I ended my first ever relationship, I told him that I loved him and that I would always love him. I still cringe thinking about it to this day and that was over 10 years ago. I did love him, I just knew we weren't compatible and that loving someone doesn't mean you're right for each other.

I also think there is a difference between loving someone and being in love with someone.
