I get mixed breed small to medium sized dogs only because I'm old and my back is bad, so I need to be able to carry the dog when they're ill or injured. I prefer a big dog like a lab mix and used to have one. The advantage to purse sized dogs is you can travel with them SO much easier. Most hotels won't even take dogs over 20 pounds. Another advantage and why small silky haired terrier type dogs are so popular is because they're some of the only breeds that don't shed. Also, small dogs eat less, so they're less expensive, although if they're purebred their vet bill may be more because they aren't always as hardy as a mix.

Don't ask me why, but if a woman owns multiple cats or a tiny dog it's an instant turn off for me. In general, I love animals. But I find the trend of women owning a dog they can put in their purse to be annoying.

Aren't there any women out there anymore that own actual sized dogs? Haha

So, if a woman you connected with and had fun being with owned a cat or a small dog, she would turn you off so much that you would write her off?

I'm just gonna chip in here and be the weird one. If having more than 3 animals means a woman is going to die alone, then I'm probably going to live 3 lifetimes alone.

As I type this my German Shepherd is laying on the floor looking at me (why, I have no clue--we just went for a mile walk in the snow). She's one of the best decisions I've ever made.

I have a cat, but it's kind of a love/hate relationship, more on the hate side. I also have a handful of chickens. I absolutely love chickens. I have since I was a kid. They're kind of my thing. And I have rabbits.

I grew up with livestock, raced sled dogs in high school, had a horse in college, and animals have been a integral part of my life since I was born.

It bugs me when men ask "how many animals do you have?" or when someone gets appalled I have a coop of MULTIPLE chickens--like hello, they're like potato chips: You can't have just one! Having 4 chickens is as easy as caring for one! They're flock animals! And the rabbits. No one understands the rabbits. Maybe even I don't understand the rabbits. I just spent half the weekend at a rabbit show. Maybe this is why the guy I was interested in left.

Anyways, I see my animals as normal. They are much more a constant in my life than any S.O. has ever been.

And YES--some women do like big, sensible dogs. I like my big dog. I'd always wanted a shepherd. I grew up with a little of all breeds--Labs, Huskies, etc. We did have little dogs too, and I do like Chihuahuas--they're nice for small spaces. Example: Tomorrow, my shepherd will take up a ton of room in the car. A Chihuahua you put it in a bag and go. They're better for apartments, and probably much more cost effective and you can have them more places allowed while still having the comfort of having a dog. But I feel like big dogs are more practical.

You're an awesome person, L&P!! Your love of animals GLOWS from your post! Your heart must be so big to love so many pets at the same time!!! Any guy would be crazy not to want to get to know you!

The overwhelming majority of women don't have a dog or cat. I personally think pet ownership in general is a dying market as we get more and more self-centered and selfish as a society (I know that I am). When I was a kid there were pet stores at the mall and downtown, now I don't see any anywhere anymore apart from the odd retail park.

I don't think there is a trend for small dogs, maybe in the early 2000's paris hilton age. Cats are a different story though, I've noticed many male cat owners.

Anyway who give a fk. Most of these dogs/cats are pretty low maintenance you won't notice it.

the reason why you dont see many pets shops around anymore is not because pet owning is dying off...but ownership is becoming more controlled in selling animals.....breeders have stringent rules to adhere and follow and this is now strictly enforced......people are becoming more open to adopting unwanted pets from pet shelters....and puppy mills and cat mills are becoming less and less prevalent...they are still there....but not as common or im hopin.....but there is an increase in people adopting animals.....and that is a beautiful thing...deb

To be honest, I see people who don't love animals as having an emotional deficit. It's all about empathy. I do know a couple of friends who aren't really into them. One was jealous as a child because her dad was abusive to her but according to her, nice to the dog. She's always punished dogs for it. She's very social, so she scarcely has time for a pet, and I get that. I didn't either for many years. But I consider it a big character flaw and to her credit she has tried to work on it and other things in therapy, but she has some empathy issues anyway because she's a diagnosed narcissist and also bipolar. Her empathy is like lightning, quick to kick in and just as quick to leave.

The other one is very social and an alcoholic and I just don't think he's very empathetic in general and the only time I've seen him get really invested and nurture and try to help someone and get really close, it was sexually driven. But both those people can be a lot of fun. I wouldn't trust either of them alone with my pets, though.

As a small dog owner- I can totally understand why women with small dogs might be a big deal breaker for some men.

I had always had big dogs all my life- German shepherd/ collie mix as a child. Later I had Black lab, And at one time I owned two boxers- they were a lot of work!!- After my boxers both tragically died I was dog less for many years and I did really enjoy the freedom of that responsibility.

But I love having a dog and want my kids to grow up having pets so now I have had a small dog for about 2 years. He is a Chihuahua/ dashund mix- a chiweenie. I decided to get a small dog because it seemed like it would be easier to take care of him than a bigger dog.

My husband really didn't want me to get this dog but I didn't care I got the dog and my husband & kids all get along with him. I don't regret getting him.

I have noticed some bad behavior I am working on with my dog that I never had issues with my bigger dogs. Such as when men or people he does not know come over he gets really upset & barks a lot * it is annoying. It takes him quite a while to get used to new people. I guess its just his personality.- small dog complex maybe? He has a stranger danger alarm that just wont shut up sometimes LOL! Sometimes when my dog does bad stuff or acts annoying my husband says he wants to get rid of him but we are not doing that!! I am working on his behavior to train him better.

I love my little dog. He sleeps a lot & loves cuddling & hiding under blankets. He is very smart, knows a lot of tricks, and understands a lot of what we say to him.

He is the first little dog I have ever had & it is quite different than having a medium or bigger dog.

I can definitely see how a woman's relationship with her small dog as a pet could threaten a man.

Yeah, it's easier to find a place to live if you're a renter when you have a small dog as opposed to a big one. And honestly, it doesn't make sense to have bigger dogs in an apartment most of the time.

I prefer medium sized dogs (25-50 lbs or so), but my list of dream breeds includes Irish wolfhounds (), Great Pyrenees, and greyhounds. There's no shortage of women out there who like bigger dogs. One of my former coworkers was a legit Great Dane breeder.

I am a woman, I have a dog and it's a hunting dog of 38-lbs. There is no sitting around with him !

Mine are little. You can tuck them under your arm...

... still not putting them in a handbag even if you paid me!

I can see how a herd of horses, a pack of dogs and a whole heap of chickens may put someone off...

But thats me... Whats the point in me changing for someone if I will be unhappy and dump them anyway. Waste of time in my eyes.

at least I haven't added goats yet...

You are kidding me right? Pet ownership dying?!?!

------------------------

Pet ownership in the U.S. has more than tripled from the 1970s, when approximately 67 million households had pets, to 2012, when there were 164 million owned pets. In other words, in 2012, 62 percent of American households included at least one pet.

U.S. Pet Ownership and Shelter Population Estimates : The

..The Humane Society of the United States

if anything it's a growth industry

Amusing thread... Pet ownership is dying?? More than three pets and you're dying alone? :D

I have two boxers, two parrots, a hamster and some tropical fish. I'm pretty happy with that. I'm sure it has put some people off dating me, but not the right people.

Surely pets are just one of the dozens of considerations that come with dating anyone?

When I said pet I mean't real pets not 'pets', the ones able to offer the owner companionship like the ones the OP mentioned (dog/cat).

If you compare the statistics below, 1 for 2007 and 1 for 2012, it shows that the percentage of dog and cat owners have dropped. Although it's only a percent or so, over several decades you could see very few people having a dog or cat.

Got two kitties, they are amazing companions and also perfect barometers for any potential partner. If the cat hisses when he walks in the door, he walks out the door fairly soon after. The cat test has never failed me, they are excellent judges of character. Human's cannot BS a cat, no amount of smiling and being 'nice' will fool a feline.

The fact they are longhairs too, means he never entertains the thought of moving in.

Personally I'm fond of women with finger monkeys and lemur's...

All kidding (and some truth) aside, I think its interesting to see a women and her pets. Usually they are a reflection of their caring nature. If they have enough room to live a comfortable life for me, them, and the animals I see a responsible and caring women. If they don't have time, energy, will, or space to care for the animals and keep the animals and their own life comfortable I see a women who is irresponsible.

Its the quality of life I'm more keen to and not the animals or volume of them. Just my .02

I have two cats who i adore. Im involved in rescues and I adore spending time with animals. They bring me so much happiness and I couldn't imagine not having them. I guess someone judging me over my cats is no big deal, because i couldnt date someone who wasn't an animal person. They don't have to as animal crazy as me, but they would need to want to have a good relationship with my pets and future pets. My boyfriend isn't a cat person per say but he always makes it a point to greet the kitties in the morning. He also loves when they cuddle with him. It's so touching and makes me so happy. They love him as well which is always a good sign. :D
