LookAtThisPOst Posted March 1, 2015 Posted March 1, 2015 I was wondering, I know people have their standards in dating someone, but are there some of which are irrational? I have a male friend of mine who won't date a woman with a certain first name because it reminds him of someone who wasn't a nice person. Example, he won't date someone with a certain first name of "Julie", out of respect for his mother, because "Julie" is his step-mother who wasn't a very nice person. He has 2 other names that are deal breakers, too. And I was like "Dude, you're way too picky!" and he said, "Well, that's just how I roll, I mean some men have their preferences for blondes, brunettes, etc." I mean, I have my deal breakers, but they make sense (smoking vs non-smoking, not a heavy drinker, etc)
d0nnivain Posted March 1, 2015 Posted March 1, 2015 A friend of mine met a great guy named Joe but wouldn't date him. When pressed she just said it's personal. It finally came out that her HS BF was named Joe, He committed suicide when they were kids. Years went by. She met, married & had a child with another Joe. When the baby was 1, that Joe was killed in a car accident. Irrational? Yes. Understandable? Yes, too. 2

Not dating someone due to a name is much like any other preference OP. It's personal. EG, The love of your life could be a smoker. However, it is your choice as to who you date and no one else should have a judgement nor any questioning over your choice. Why does his choice bother you enough to post about it?
newmoon Posted March 1, 2015 Posted March 1, 2015 i wouldn't date a man with my dad's name, it would be weird for me. my current bf - i have the same first name as his mom, and it's a very uncommon name. she died like 10 years ago, but i have always thought he picked me because of my name. he loved his mom so much that the name brings back fond memories for him (I assume). so, people can specifically want a name too.
AVarma Posted March 1, 2015 Posted March 1, 2015 As a man with a Muslim name this is my worst nightmare
No Limit Posted March 1, 2015 Posted March 1, 2015 When someone connects a bad experience or other negative thoughts with a name it's natural for them to want to avoid those. The names of my 2 main bullies for example are names I prefer not to hear at all (thankfully, they're pretty rare). Other times, some names are just plain ridiculous. I can't understand how some parents take money from companies and name their own children after their products. Or that one family which named their baby "Dovahkiin" (after the main character of the game The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim); sorry, but you're making a fool out of yourself. Give yourself any nickname you like, but you can't expect me to take you seriously when you present yourself as Rambo etc...
compulsivedancer Posted March 1, 2015 Posted March 1, 2015 I still have a hard time with my OM's name, and it is very common. I don't think I could date someone with his name. I skip books with main characters with his name or his girlfriend's name for the same reason.
