adiamond Posted February 28, 2015 Posted February 28, 2015 Hi, I really enjoy going to thrift stores to find clothes sometimes (stuff with tags still on it, gently used brand named clothing etc). Would you be turned off by this? I recently went to a sale with my roommate and bought my SO a Kenneth Cole sweater and Tommy Hilfiger dress shirt for like 1$ a piece lol because I thought they looked nice. I was so excited to show him my new finds (brand new with tags!! forever 21 shirt for 1$, really nice quality Zara dress for 1$, Rue 21 dress 1$ etc) He looked alright but not excited like I was. Was I out of line? I'm not sure what people would think if they got thrift store clothes from their SO... I also shop at normal stores like JCPenny and etc. I don't want to come off as super cheap or gross ... though I don't have any income so I'm pretty poor. I know everyone is different but I wanted your opinions.
Fhsjkfjrhsdh3646 Posted February 28, 2015 Posted February 28, 2015 You're fine. If its just random gifts and no particular occasion there is no reason you can't save money. If its for Christmas, Anniversary, or a Birthday, you should only buy new -- otherwise it implies that you're cheap with your money.
d0nnivain Posted March 1, 2015 Posted March 1, 2015 I too love great thrift store finds like the one you describe but my DH turns up his nose. It's not everybody's cup of tea. Talk to your BF. Since you paid so little for the clothes you can either take them back & sell them yourself on e-bay or something or he can use them to wash his car. If he's really grossed out by the idea, don't buy him this stuff in the future.
CrystalCastles Posted March 1, 2015 Posted March 1, 2015 he can use them to wash his car. ?? Turn perfectly good clothes into rags?? Why not just re-donate them and they'll end up back at the thrift store so that someone else can buy them and enjoy them? Using good clothes to wash a car seems like a waste- someone else can love and enjoy those clothes instead. I love thrift stores. I don't buy other people things from them, but that's where most of my clothes came from. Clothing stores sometimes donate extra stock that won't sell to thrift stores, I find lots of new or gently used clothes that look great. I don't see the point in blowing hundreds of bucks for a designer sweater when you can get the same sweater, new, from the thrift store for way cheaper. But I personally love saving money because I prefer to spend that money on dates, fun activities and vacations with my boyfriend, rather than clothes.
Author adiamond Posted March 1, 2015 Author Posted March 1, 2015 Thanks guys! I was really excited about my purchases lol I thought they were great deals and I have no problem buying gently used/new clothes for cheap! I think I'm going to give them to my dad since they wear similar size clothes and I know my dad would love it! 1

My advice to you is to think for yourself and remember that when it comes to gifting, it really is the thought that counts. Edited March 1, 2015 by a LoveShack.org Moderator
KatZee Posted March 1, 2015 Posted March 1, 2015 Some people can be put off by this. If a boyfriend ever presented me with clothes that were from a thrift store I'd feel kind of grossed out; even if the tags were still on, the stigma is still there. Thrift store=previously worn clothes. Perhaps don't verbalize that the things you gift him are from the thrift shop. If the tags are on there's no reason to be like, "look what I just got for a dollar!" Save that convo for your girlfriends.
Els Posted March 1, 2015 Posted March 1, 2015 My guy would be thrilled if I found a shirt for $1. Really though it depends on the person. If your SO doesn't like it, no biggie. Just don't give that gift again.
badpenny Posted March 1, 2015 Posted March 1, 2015 My H and I have not bought ourselves any new clothes for around 5 years. Everything we've purchased, has been from charity shops or thrift stores. I have even been in the situation where I have found something really nice in such a shop, but have still not been able to afford it. And I'm talking 2 weeks ago. The only things I refuse to buy second hand are underwear (obviously!!) and shoes. Any underwear I've had in the past half-decade, has been as a gift from someone (my mum bought me a 5-pack of ladies' briefs from a supermarket, about a month ago) and I managed to save some cash and bought myself some cheap kid's trainers in a shoe-market during their January sales. normally around £15.00, I bought them for just under £6.00. I'm going to have to make these last. I genuinely do not know when I'll be able to afford any more shoes... When thrift ISN'T a choice, even buying a second-hand jacket is a blessing. You SO should be damned grateful.
GemmaUK Posted March 1, 2015 Posted March 1, 2015 One guy I dated was appalled that I liked charity/thrift shops. I never bought him anything there but funnily enough he used to compliment me on my clothes and style a lot. What I found most amusing though was that he loved staying in hotels and hostels. If he had issues with thrift clothes and people having worn them before then why was he so keen to sleep in a bed where hundreds of people would have previously slept? 2

She has since decided to give them to her dad.
