My friend always picks up on my vibes, what does this mean?

I am kind of fascinated by this. I am close with my friend, but he always knows when I am sad, happy, or mad. I hide my sadness very well, yet he always says he feels what I feel, and knows when I am sad. He said "When you're sad, I feel sad, I feel your sadness, same with your anger, and happiness. I can feel it. I can feel your vibes." How is that? Is it because we have a strong relationship? How does one feel what the other person feels? How can he know when I am happy, sad, and angry? It fascinates me, and I don't know if any of you know anything about this.
