The most obvious one I've seen was the "elevator"; a single quick scan from head to toe. It'll take her less than a second to do, then that's it. Done. I wouldn't want to catch his eye, certainly not more than once as I'd find that embarrassing. I wouldn't keep looking. I'd assume that a guy in the same room who was interested in me would make himself known somehow. I guess a shy one might not though.

Also having another female on your arm is the universal signal not to look. If you're not available then there is no point in even going there visually. I've found it to be the exact opposite. I get checked out way more when I'm walking with a girl. And usually the prettier the girl, the more/harder the girls will stare. I dated this tall blonde ballerina once who was really pretty. Men and women in general would stare at us openly. When I'm by myself i'm not invisible, but I get no where near that level of attention. I think having a women on your arm is more a universal signal that you're a dateable guy, which makes girls all the more interested.

A man's gaze follows, but a woman will glance once, maybe twice, and that's it (this woman, anyway). It would take a man I find very attractive to look and keep looking. Even then, it's quick glances when he's not looking.

I openly stare at other women, not because I want to get into their pants but because I like to see the various forms of female beauty out there. A really attractive woman is something I check out to see how she dresses, carries herself and also to wonder what makes her different. If I check the guy out in this instance it's only to wonder what she was thinking.....
