truncated Posted February 10, 2015 Posted February 10, 2015 Many times, one hears mm and mw described as "psycophaths" but is that really true? I thread on here made me wonder how, if one judges mm or mw as psychopaths, then wouldn't that also make ow or om psychopaths as well? ( I don't think that most are psycopathic. This doens't excuse their behvaior though. Serrial cheaters and om/ow are, in my opinion, a different matter) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=stG2gd9_JUg
autumnnight Posted February 10, 2015 Posted February 10, 2015 This is very interesting. I read a book similar to this one time or a class, and the thing that struck me was how many people can, in limited ways and circumstances or for limited times, exhibit several or even many of these characteristics. That is why the only person who should suggest a stranger is a sociopath or a psychopath is...well, no one knows about a stranger. But only a qualified professional can accurately assess anyone.
Quiet Storm Posted February 10, 2015 Posted February 10, 2015 I think there are two reasons why people will appear to have no empathy 1) Sociopathic or otherwise personality disordered. They really have no consideration for the feelings of others. 2) People that have empathy, but have learned to detach from negative feelings. They have the ability to block out guilt and justify or rationalize their behavior. This often stems from a difficult childhood, when negative feelings such as fear, anger, confusion, become overwhelming. The brain goes into denial to protect the child from these negative emotions, as they aren't equipped to cope yet. These can patterns become habitual, and even automatic. For example in the case of an OW, she may feel pangs of guilt towards the BS, but they get suppressed or rationalized away.
