ralfgarnett Posted February 9, 2015 Posted February 9, 2015 For those of you that have read my thread you will know that my wife and I are 7 months apart now after 20 years togtether, her leaving came out of the blue and has knocked me sideways, I am in counselling, suffering depression, low mood anxiety etc all caused by the separation, I was talking to a friend of mine over the weekend she has recently separated from her partner and she is suffering too, she said to me that have I ever thought that I could be suffering from post traumatic stress disorder ptsd ?, I never thought about it until now and it made me think but is it possible that a marriage breakdown could cause something so damaging as PTSD ?, this what they used to call shell shock in WW1 we have all seen the horrific images of soldiers suffering.
CrystalShine2011 Posted February 10, 2015 Posted February 10, 2015 I have heard of this happening. I recently broke it off with my ex (dated for 2 years) but before that, he was married for 10 years and had two amazing children out of that relationship. They broke it off and the pain he described sounds similar to yours. I think perhaps the familiarity of living with someone for that long just shocks you when it changes. Counseling helped him, and so did focusing on building new friendships and starting new hobbies.
