Does affection mean anything?

I started seeing a guy just under a month ago. Initially it started out as a one-night stand situation (I'd never had a one-night stand previously and he'd only had one). I'm 22, he's 29. I didn't think it would go anywhere initially but he asked for my number and we've been on about five dates since. He works everyday because he runs a business and I'm studying so we don't see each other often but we've been spending weekends together. Thing is, we've not discussed status - I'm leaving the city in 8 months time and so I don't expect a serious relationship, but he's so affectionate with me and I just don't know how to read it. We've had sex a couple more times since the first time, but we spend far more time chatting, snuggling and kissing than we do having sex. He always initiates physical contact - weirdly he's not really the cuddly type after sex, but when we're out walking he'll always hold my hand and if we're sat together having coffee somewhere we'll basically be inseparable.

Like I said I'm not after anything too serious, but I like what we have. I'd like to think this means a bit more than just sex, but I find him hard to read. When we do spend time together, he usually finds excuses to extend the time we have together, so I think he might like me. Is it normal to be that affectionate with someone you have no feelings for? I realise he might just be an affectionate person, but it's confusing.

He's a shy kind of guy if that makes any difference.

It's a good sign but you can't tell from just that...
