CoolBurn Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 So as you all know Valentine's day is coming up and I'm having a bit of an issue deciding what to buy and do that day. You see me and my boyfriend have a tradition of celebrating 'monthaversaries' leading up to our first year together. I'm a student so money is tight but he does work and therefore his gifts have been nicer and pricier. He constantly tells me not to spend money on gifts for him because I don't work but I do want to get him nice things too. Anyway, this month our monthaversary is on the 10th while Valentine's is not too far away either. So, what do I do? Should I get him two separate gifts, one big gift, or just gift accordingly to the occasion?
edelweiss Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 To me, there is no significance to a 10 month "anniversary," so I'd just get a valentines day gift. If I were to get any gift at all. 1
d0nnivain Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 Is your anniversary on or around the 14th? If not, since you have this monthly anniversary tradition, two gifts are in order. You got him a Christmas present & an anniversary gift, right? Precedent set. You don't have to spend a ton of money but you may need to be creative. Do whatever you would normally do for the anniversary but perhaps bake him heart shaped cookies for Valentine's Day. Even if you bought the Pillsbury slice & bake can / tube, that is still under $4, delicious & thoughtful.

It's basically a date night we have set out to ourselves once a month, so if things get hectic both of us know it's coming and can plan accordingly a while ahead. The gifts are never something too expensive or fancy, mostly things like a hat, a pack of macarons, a shirt, scarf, I don't know, things like that. But it's become a tradition, basically a countdown to an actual anniversary.

I agree with you, I thought maybe a bottle of wine would be nice, but I'm not still set on whether to give that on the anniversary or VDay.
angel.eyes Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 Who started the monthly anniversary celebrations? If it was you, this would be a good month to retire the practice. Just give him a heads up that you'll be planning one gift...on Valentine's Day. Most people (and certainly most guys) don't attach much significance to monthly milestones. Besides, at some point, it's going to get downright silly...one year and two months, five years and one month... In terms of gifts, the thought and effort are important, more so than the precise amount spent. Which would be more meaningful to you: a $50 gift that he had to special order weeks in advance that's something that you've always wanted but would never get for yourself or a $500 gift card to some random hardware store? I'm not saying don't spend money on him, but work creatively within your budget to make or get him gifts that would be meaningful to him. 2

I think it's a great way to ensure you spend time together regardless of how busy or hectic things get. How about making him a home-cooked meal of done of his favorite dishes for your monthly anniversary, and then having a gift and special date night out on Valentine's?

Hahah, I love your idea of a home cooked meal. Thank you.
angel.eyes Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 I saw your response afterwards. I think it's a great idea, one you may want to keep beyond the first year as a personal tradition. In fact, I may borrow your idea in my next relationship.

Sometimes our other plans get cancelled because of you know... life, but we always plan around that day so we do get together. Most of the time we see each other 3-4 times weekly, but every once in a while something comes up and one of us can't make it, so it's nice to know both of us try our BEST to be well rested, relaxed and in a good mood that day.
Dybbuk Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 One thing I have done is made him a package of a few of his favorite things. It's cheap, it's easy and it's really thoughtful because you have to know the person well enough to get a lot of little gifts that remind you of him. For example: My BF loves mountain dew (insert bottle of Mountain Dew), he loves games so I got us a new card game to play, pasta is his favorite food so I made a 'coupon' for homemade pasta dinner anytime. Just little things like that so he knows that you notice all the things he loves!
