Our 20th anniversary of engagement is coming up - I have some issues with it

In March, our 20th anniversary of our engagement is coming up, and my husband surprised me this morning telling me about how he wanted to re-create our engagement party. The actual 20th anniversary of our wedding, however, is not until March 2016!

 

 

We live in St. Paul, MN, in the Twin Cities area, well, that's not technically true for me as I didn't live here originally, I moved from Detroit, MI to St. Paul, MN because I went to college there, wanted experience of living away from home at the time - I was 18 when I moved.

 

 

 

Our engagement was only a year long, we married in March 1996.

 

 

He asked me to get a tie-up crop top, purple sports bra crop top, black skirt and knee-high boots (as that's I wore at the time in March 1995) and to meet him in a specific restaurant (the specific one where we got engaged, it's still there AFAIK) whilst he's trying to re-create how he looked back then, including the mullet he had, yes, they still existed in 1995, they weren't just in Ferris Bueller's Day Off - as some people seem to think online. Basically, he's trying to grow a mullet haircut! Isn't that what you see on 80s/90s footage on America's Funniest Home Videos or World's Wildest Police Videos?

 

 

 

He's also trying to look for a 1993 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera sedan, because that's what he drove at the time when we were engaged! We don't have one now, we have a big Chevrolet Impala, a 2014 one - I should know, I'm into my cars, bit of a female autogeek/petrolhead.

 

 

But what he said, or rather showed me next, shocked me; he showed me the original tighty-whities/briefs he worn on the night we made love during our engagement, he admitted he'd kept them in their original unwashed state, kept them in a wooden box, and was going to wear them again for re-creating the engagement. He said he'd stored them in the loft for the best part of 2 decades, and admitted he wanted to wear them again at some point to re-create the 20th anniversary.

TBH, I didn't even know that he'd kept his undies from our original engagement, isn't that just weird?

WTH? Keeping dirty underwear?? Unless you have a fetish, I can't understand his motivation for it.

 

 

 

I'm wondering, is his motivation a very romantic one, re-creating the whole day (we got engaged on March 5, 1995) from start to finish, and maybe even videoing it for posterity (that's what he suggested!) and as a memory?

 

 

I don't know what to think, on one hand it sounds romantic, but others might say it's crass, weird, strange.

 

 

What's your opinions on my situation? Is it a romantic gesture or is it weird?

 

 

Looking for advice on this situation, would be interested to hear your thoughts on this.

That is sorta strange about the underwear.

 

Anyways, if you re-create an engagement party, you might want to make it clear that it's more of an anniversary party. Another "engagement" party might look a little tacky as gifts are usually given at these parties to new couples just starting out. (Not couples of almost 20 years) Be sure to make it clear that no gifts are required, just presence. Otherwise it sounds like a fun idea.

 

My husband and I renewed our vows at our wedding venu with my parents at our 5 year mark. I'm thinking of doing that often as well.

Omg.... You have to laugh at the underwear thing!! That is hysterical! Ya know it's definitely nutty and bizarre but it also sounds like this man truly loves and treasures you. I think it's wonderful that he has put this much thought into it, most men wouldn't.

On the one hand, it's pretty cool that he remembers when he proposed. I can't, although the fact that we were both plastered at the time might be a factor.

 

But this seems a little overboard. A mullet, for crissakes? It's pretty brave, I'll give him that, because if I tried it I'd be able to hear my friends laughing and jeering a county or two over.

As others have said, all props to him. I've never make the mistake of forgetting my wedding anniversary, but engagement date ? I couldn't tell you what month it was...

I'm going to marry my fiancé on March 2016 and this underwear thing gave me an awesome idea, please thank your husband for me! But well, I'm washing it...

Get him to wash the undies (or do it yourself) and then celebrate the fact that you are married to a romantic man who has the ability to plan things & who can still fit into the same clothes from 20 years ago.

My engagement was ...ummm...summer? Could have been fall... I do know we got married Dec. 9 because I had to look at the marriage license every year for about 4 years before I could remember if it was the 7th, 9th or 12th...

 

To the OP, I think your DH is a sweetheart. A little weird, but a total romantic. I even think the underwear is sweet, but you should probably wash them before the big anniversary.

 

And I truly hope he has a plan for what to do about the mullet after the big night.

Oh my gosh, this is the first time I've ever burst out laughing over a Loveshack post. OK, the underpants are weird, but on the other hand you have a husband going above and beyond to celebrate an important anniversary. I think it's sweet.
