Really people lie to protect themselves, to get out of things, to protect the feelings of others, to avoid controntation. Most people don't lie just to lie. Although, I am sure those people are out there. I dated this guy who would lie about the stupidest things. For example there was an old movie on tv one night and I asked him if he had ever seen it. He said no. But then he had a friend over and his friend and I started talking about the movie. My guy chimes in and says, "yeah and what about when..." and starts talking about a scene in the movie. I was like I thought you never saw it? He was like, yeah - I lied. I have no clue why he would lie about that - the movie was old, came out way before we were together so why would I care if he saw it or not. Funny thing is that he never lied to me (that I know of) about anything big. Just these silly little things that didn't matter. Weird.

People lie because they think they have reasons to, and they don't have enough conscience to override the things that they want, that they think lying may get them. Occasionally, people lie to protect someone else, but 99% of the time, people do it for themselves. Sometimes people want respect or for you to think well of them, sometimes they want to preserve a chance at getting back together with someone, sometimes they just want to have their cake and eat it too, and yes, there are those people who just lie because they can and because they always have. The one thing that all prolific liars have in common though, is that NONE of them will ever find any real happiness, because they eventually get so caught up in their web of lies that they have to live it, and eventually, their house of cards collapses. I've had a couple of GFs who were master liars (ok, only one of them was a master, the other one I could always tell), and I've known some guys that made me sick with how much they lied to their GFs. It is NOT a gender thing. The best thing to do is to not fall in love with anyone who isn't basically honest with you, and who you can't trust (easier said than done, believe me).
