Col1 Posted January 17, 2015 Posted January 17, 2015 (edited) I bought some used equipment for a couple hundred dollars from a small business. He was fine with accepting a check. Two weeks went by without it being cashed. Today I received an answering machine message from a Check Cashing store. They mentioned that the guy is cashing the check with their Check Cashing store. The check cashing place asked that I call them back to confirm: -Verify that I wrote the check and gave it to this guy -The date I wrote on the check -The exact dollar amount of the check Is this the standard procedure or could this be a phishing scam? I've never been called by a Check Cashing store before. Just wondering if it sounds legit. Edited January 17, 2015 by Col1
MsSmurf Posted January 17, 2015 Posted January 17, 2015 Well if you're not sure if its legitimate you could contact the small business and ask them if they used that check cashing business to process your check. You could also look up that check cashing businesses corporate number to call and ask about their check verifying process. I haven't written a check to anyone in years, but I have used check cashing places to cash checks on occasion. I know their verification process is slightly different from that of a banks in that they asked me for contact information for the person who wrote me the check. I figured this was to contact them in case the check didn't clear. Perhaps they are now trying to prevent fraud by verifying the check first. 1
applej4 Posted January 18, 2015 Posted January 18, 2015 It sounds odd, but it could be a verification thing. As long as you don't give any information other than what they already have I wouldn't worry.
