Texting vs. Phone calls in early stages of dating

I know with the wave of instant messaging and immediate gratification with texting the phone call seems to be 'old school'.

 

 

Here's my take on it:

I've been texting (just had a first date with) a guy for several months now (on and off- long story!). We met via Tinder, chatted on there for a bit, then he asked for my number and we have been communicating via text ever since. We would exchange LONG, LONG messages, getting to know each other... and I wondered 'geez, this is ridiculous... why don't we just have a phone call??' I felt as often as we were communicating and the length of the messages warranted a phone call instead.

We just had our first date this week and now the frequency of texting has increased! But now I want to talk to him MORE than just a superficial text... with no emotion conveyed, etc.

Is this something that takes a little time?

 

My girlfriend is obsessively hooked to texting and if she has ever called me in the past 4 years, my first thought is 'oh no, what's wrong?' I think she has a problem!

I realize some people are averse to a phone call.

 

But if you're talking so often and in detail, why not??

I feel like texting is for the most part totally superficial small talk status.

What do you all think?

texting is great for short messages like pick up milk, or I'm running late. It's lousy for genuine communication. It's the worst way in the world for emotions or sensitive subjects

I prefer calling/meeting in person over texting but sometimes it's the best way to communicate especially if you're both busy. Usually the younger generation text way more than call but I'm sure if you're like, wanna call me? he wouldn't mind calling you. Sometimes people feel like asking to call can come off as needy but if you guys are both into each other, calling wouldn't be a big deal.
