ponchsox Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 I've been on dates with two women older than me and I'm just not interested in that age group. What's the youngest age a girl would be interested in dating a 38 year old? Is 30ish realistic?
Michelle ma Belle Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 To answer your initial question, no, 38 definitely is not too old to be dating younger women. If anything, you're in a perfect age bracket for dating younger but not so young that the girls are still wearing their training bras Early to mid thirties would be ideal. Most women have their sh*t together by this age and have some life experiences and interests that come closer to matching your own. 1

No idea where to find these women in their 30's, but we are the same age and I routinely date 20-24 year old women. Not because it's my first choice, just because that's what I end up with. The dating works with the early 20's ones. LTR, not so much. But the early 30's ones are fine my ex wife, i was married to for 10 years, was the age spread you are asking about.
central Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 Any younger than 28 are likely to be too immature or unsure of what they really want. So, I'd suggest at least 28, with early 30s being very good. Much older, and the prospects of a family are diminished or riskier (especially as it will take a couple of years before you can reach that point with assurance), if that's something you want. 1

This is a good point. The young ones are all over the place trying to find themselves. Very flighty.

I don't consider it really a big age difference at this point in life. Other details matter, such as where you both are in life (re: kids, etc.) 1
lucy_in_disguise Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 I'm 28 and I'm not even attracted to guys as old as me, usually. I don't know where the myth originated that women prefer older men. I think everyone prefers younger (and usually hotter) to older. Whether they can get it in a reasonably mature package, is a different question. So to answer your question, personally, I wouldn't date a 38 year old. 1
elaine567 Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 Other details matter, such as where you both are in life (re: kids, etc.) I agree timing is very important, meeting the right people at the right time ihn their life can be great but meeting the right person at the wrong time of their life can be a recipe for disaster. A lot of time can be wasted dating people whose aspirations aren't complementary. I.e. he wants a picket fence and three kids and she wants to see the world and start her own business, he wants to go partying "forever" and she wants two kids and ultimately wants to join the parent/teacher association. As for the OP dating 2 "older" women, I don't think two dates will really classify the whole of that demographic, will it?

Emily Post (miss manners) says the acceptable age range for men is "Half your age plus seven So in your case it would be 38/2 = 19. Then add seven. 19 + 7 = 26. So yes it's realistic.

veggirl Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 I'm 31 and wouldn't date someone who is 38 BUT I don't think I'm necessarily the norm. I think most women around 30 would be fine with it. I just prefer guys as close to my age as possible...within 3 yrs of my age really. 1

I think as you age then the perception of age changes, when you are in you are in your teens a year either way can be a huge deal. At 30 I would not have dated an "old guy" at 38 either, like you 2-3 years max. Huge gulf in attitudes and shared experiences from 30 to 38. I would have rather have gone down to 25, than consider going up to 38 when I was 30...
deathandtaxes Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 I'd think that as long as both parties have their **** together and are on the same page on a lot of things. Or they could very well be opposite, with the younger party having their life together and the older not. I'm 36 and pretty much have my crap together. Good job. No debt. Stuff like that. I generally don't shoot for under 30. Women younger than that just seem to young and I think there's a really high likelihood of a lifestyle mismatch. There are exceptions, sure, but they'd take too long to find. There's plenty near my age to suffice that I don't have to go scrapin' the young ladies. 1

I always felt comfortable staying within the 10 year range with the men I've dated. A lot of women like older men.. and 38 is still young btw
stillafool Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 So the acceptable age for an 80 year old is 47??? Yes and 100 year old men have to marry 57 year old women.

I don't think there's anything wrong with that sort of age gap where two adults consent to dating each other. An 8 year gap when you're in your 30s shouldn't necessarily be a problem, either, although of course there will be some people who think so (and hence you won't get to date them).
elaine567 Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 Yes and 100 year old men have to marry 57 year old women. For any 57 year women out there, get off OLD, the man of your dreams is is in your local old folks home and he has just had his congratulatory message from the Queen. 2
FitChick Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 (edited) Yes,,,, If she were so inclined, which isn't likely. That's what you think. It's interesting the OP won't date anyone a year or two older or even his own age. Edited December 11, 2014 by FitChick
