Rejected Rosebud Posted December 6, 2014 Posted December 6, 2014 Yeah, it's clinical, but 7 out of 10 is a reference that is easily understood. Everyone can get what that means, without vagueness. Using other terms is vague, and yes often vagueness can be good, but this is simply for discussion purposes. But the thing is, NOT everybody gets what it means as you can see on this thread, like I said I do agree that there is objective beauty like Travis Fimmel and there is objective ugliness like the elephant man but where you lose me is when everybody else has to fall somewhere on a linear scale between the two. It's the same with intelligence in my opinion, there are so many different kinds, a genius artist may not be able to do higher mathematics. You can't measure those things linearly!! I have no idea what a 5 or a 7 is, I swear to god!! though I definitely can tell who is out of this world amazing on either end of your scale. Also why do we NEED this kind of reference for 'discussion purposes' nobody I know talks about other people like this except for one guy named Mike and everybody teases him about it! 1

The point is that it's subjective! Everyone has a different idea, but when someone uses a linear method that everyone understands, it reduces vagueness. Yes, when someone says "that person is a 5" you don't personally know what that person looks like, but you know that in their mind, they were likely average. THAT is the point. Everyone knows that 5 is the middle of 1 and 10. But no one person will sit at any one place, because it's subjective. It's just a way for one person to clarify their personal opinion.
Under The Radar Posted December 6, 2014 Posted December 6, 2014 Human Beings are generally great at two things: One, comparing themselves negatively to other human beings ...... and two ...... uhhh ...... uhhh ...... the **** if I know. Anyway, I guess what I'm really trying to say is that my eyelashes and kneecaps are a solid 9.5 3
Author Phoe Posted December 6, 2014 Author Posted December 6, 2014 Anyway, I guess what I'm really trying to say is that my eyelashes and kneecaps are a solid 9.5 Hey, nothing wrong with that! I've got great eyelashes too
CrystalCastles Posted December 6, 2014 Posted December 6, 2014 The point is that it's subjective! Everyone has a different idea, but when someone uses a linear method that everyone understands, it reduces vagueness. Actually it adds more vagueness because of beauty's subjectivity. There is no strict definition of any of the numbers on the scale because they mean different things to different people. Yes, when someone says "that person is a 5" you don't personally know what that person looks like, but you know that in their mind, they were likely average. But they may not be average. Sometimes my friends point out a hot guy they see on the street to me, and almost all the time I think, he's hot? Really? THAT is hot? Definitely not to me, at all. So your "5" might be a "10" to me. THAT is the point. Everyone knows that 5 is the middle of 1 and 10. But no one person will sit at any one place, because it's subjective. It's just a way for one person to clarify their personal opinion. You can clarify your opinion, but it won't mean much to anyone else, since each person has their own definition of the numbers on the scale. The scale, in my opinion, is absolute bunk because it cannot be applied universally and is too easily disputed. 2
Author Phoe Posted December 6, 2014 Author Posted December 6, 2014 You can clarify your opinion, but it won't mean much to anyone else. Obviously I need to clarify more, because your whole post literally just repeated exactly what I said, but in different terms.
Author Phoe Posted December 6, 2014 Author Posted December 6, 2014 What I am saying (and clearly failing at saying) is that YES its all subjective and vague and it always will be! On persons 5 might be another person's 10. It's all subjective! I've said this over and over! Lol. The way in which the number system reduces vagueness, is because everyone knows numbers in order of 1-10. Everyone know what comes after 6 and everyone knows what's just before 9 and everyone knows that it starts at 1 and ends at 10. EVERYONE knows these things. So, if bobby states that someone is a 5, because 5 is between 1 and 10, we know that bobby personally views this person as totally middle of the range as far as attractiveness goes. Bobby doesn't think this person's ugly, bobby doesn't think this person's stunning. This is just Bobbys opinion and no one else's. And because he used an easily understood scale, super simple, a line with 10 points on it, and chose the middle point, we know that bobby's opinion is in the middle. This is ONLY Bobbys opinion. Sue might disagree and think that same person is higher in attractiveness. Hence the subjectiveness. I'm simply saying that when someone uses a number, its easy to gauge how that person personally views the other person. That is all! That is ALL I'm trying to say. I'm not saying the number system is good, I'm not saying it's a gold standard, I'm not saying everyone should agree on using it, heck, I've stated more than once in this thread that even I don't use it!! I just think it's useful in pinning down a point on how a particular person feels about another one. How something so simple became so ridiculously convoluted is beyond me.

Why not go on Hot or Not & see what people get rated. When I was on there there were plenty of women with really low ratings & plenty with really high ratings. So basically there's tons of people where the majority finds them attractive & there's a lot where their deemed as unattractive.

elaine567 Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 Only thing you need to know about the number scale of attractiveness is that there is no such thing as a 10/10! For example Scarlett Johansson is a 9.9/10 Is she a 9.9 here https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=i&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=images&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0CAcQjRw&url=http%3A%2F%2Fen.paperblog.com%2Fscarlett-johansson-smoulders-in-new-dolce-gabbana-ad-451214%2F&ei=gquDVMfSCoPUOd6ugagP&bvm=bv.80642063,d.ZWU&psig=AFQjCNG0yOEHZKCU8N9s7pct8-gd05eEog&ust=1418001564388381 or here? https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=i&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=images&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0CAcQjRw&url=http%3A%2F%2Fjohanssonweb.org%2F2014%2F04%2F02%2Fscarlett-johansson-terrified-for-vanity-fair-makeup-free-photoshoot%2F&ei=0quDVLf0OYvqOJmigIgF&bvm=bv.80642063,d.ZWU&psig=AFQjCNG0yOEHZKCU8N9s7pct8-gd05eEog&ust=1418001564388381

Mostly because she is wearing cosmetics and the picture is airbrushed like crazy. In the bottom link Scarlett looks a 5, maybe 6, for me. This is going by just physical attractiveness. But Scarlett looks really good natural without cosmetics, and a non-celebrity woman that was similar to her I'd be happy to date. But I prefer cosmetic free, natural beauty anyway. Also, comparing Phoe, from her pictures in her album, to the bottom link of Scarlett, Phoe is better looking. 1
CrystalCastles Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 Obviously I need to clarify more, because your whole post literally just repeated exactly what I said, but in different terms. Er, sorry then. I'm simply saying that when someone uses a number, its easy to gauge how that person personally views the other person. That is all! That is ALL I'm trying to say. I just think it's useful in pinning down a point on how a particular person feels about another one. How something so simple became so ridiculously convoluted is beyond me. Its convoluted because it makes zero sense. Its not simple because you can't take every person's idea of beauty and conform it to something as banal as a number scale. You asked for opinions on the number scale and I am giving you my opinion on it: its stupid. Why do you have to use numbers to gauge someone's attractiveness anyway? I find it quite insulting and demeaning to slap a number on a person like they're a sheep for sale. In reality, the number scale, leagues, and $h!z like that matter very little and people generally don't treat scales and leagues like they're the bible. 1
somedude81 Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 The number system is just too complicated to use. My system for women is much more simple Ugly Plain Cute Beautiful I believe that the vast majority of healthy weight, young women are at least cute. Makeup can bump up a woman one tier.
Under The Radar Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 (edited) For *ME* makeup can bump a woman down one tier.
