SleepingLover Posted March 15, 2005 Posted March 15, 2005 Ok ladies... How would you prefer a guy to dress on your first date? What is attractive and what is not? Suit and tie? Shirt and tie? Casual? Jeans and flannel shirt? You name it, let's hear your answers As for me, I usually wear something like a banded collar (white...like I'm wearing in my Avatar) shirt and some black dress slacks with some casual shoes to match. Is that cool or should I ditch the dress code?
sunlight Posted March 15, 2005 Posted March 15, 2005 As long as your comfortable. I myself, would always go casual. Depends on what we are going to be doing. The best would be to go on a date wearing pjs, that would be wonderful.
Author SleepingLover Posted March 15, 2005 Author Posted March 15, 2005 PJs! That would be a cool idea heheh. The looks you get would be hysterical and would certainly make for an interesting evening. Some bunny slippers would add to the festivity hehe
Pendawn Posted March 15, 2005 Posted March 15, 2005 I love smart/casual. Nice jeans, boots or some other leather shoes (not sneakers), a nice shirt or thin smart sweater. No tie and a smart jacket - a blazer or leather jacket. Total heaven.
LucreziaBorgia Posted March 16, 2005 Posted March 16, 2005 What is attractive and what is not? Attractive: classic business casual like jeans, nice sweaters, DocMartens or some other boots (not sneakers), layers, comfort but class, minimum cologne and clean smelling clothes Not: anything suggesting 'trend' (dressing like a pop star or a rapper - flashy/tacky) or 'fashionista' (keep the metrosexual stuff to a minimum) - clothing that looks like sports uniforms or that belongs in a gym (including sneakers and sweats), clothes that look like you did hard farm labor in, dirty clothes, ill fitting clothes, prom gear, cheap cologne There are some exceptions depending on the guy - if you are a hipster guy with hornrims and tattoos, then a different type of clothing will work on your dates - if you are a Wall St. kind of guy, then a more formal dress will work for you. Basically, dress up while dressing down - but don't dress in a style that clashes with you or attracts more attention that you do.
Merin Posted March 16, 2005 Posted March 16, 2005 A pair of nice jeans and a casual shirt are good to go IMO. NO Tennis shoes though.. Just prefer to see a guy in Doc Martins or other nice leather shoes... Sketchers are cool too;) Thinking about it.. I've never had any guy show up for a date wearing a suit and tie Smell Good! This is important!!! LOL I love seeing a guy who's just had a shower.. hair still kind of wet and messy (if it's cut short.. no long hair guys for me) AND Please leave your Bllliiinngggg at home LOL I don't mind seeing a necklace on a guy but for real... when it says "Money" on it and it's blinding... uh.. NO! My BF is very casual.. LOL funny I was just talking to one of my gf's about this today.. he wears jeans, tshirts pretty much no matter where we're going and I'm all okay with that. He looks great in Jeans and a wife beater LOL and he always smells good
Author SleepingLover Posted March 16, 2005 Author Posted March 16, 2005 Hhehe I, myself, have no problems in the smell good dept. I get compliments on that all the time. Even from dudes....ack! Now you know you smell good when a guy says "Dude! You smell awesome...what cologne are you wearing?"... it's a bit freaky though! LOL! That did happen BTW. And BTW, I don't wear cologne, I actually use a body spray called BODman.. it comes in several scents at Walmart. My Favorite is the Techno, it has a bit of a fresh lime smell to it. It lasts all day too and isn't overpowering On top of using the body spray, I spray my clothing with fabric refresher ...LOL! I don't want anyone accusing me of being a stinker It is good to see the posts though. Thank you all. I hope some us guys can get some pretty good tips from you ladies So far I have nabbed a few. I often will go out in jeans as well. So long as they are nice jeans. Looks like I'm putting Doc Martins on my to buy list heheh
agnf666 Posted March 16, 2005 Posted March 16, 2005 Casual is nice. Suit and tie is too dressy. I met a guy who wore the same clothes he wore at work on a date. EW. He was a construction worker too. So he was really muddy, looked like he fell in the mud and showed up this way at my door. So casual and smellin good as Merlin says is a good thing, very good thing.
tokyo Posted March 16, 2005 Posted March 16, 2005 I think how you dress depends on where you go, what kind of location you chose and also maybe on your date. Some want their date to dress up like them and will ditch you if you only wear jeans and T-shirt (hm, I guess, that's the high maintenance girl ). If you dress up too much, more than her, it will also look funny, as if you are trying too hard to make a good impression on her. I would stick to what the other posters have said, sounds reasonable and I don't think you are such a bad dresser, but: Originally posted by SleepingLover As for me, I usually wear something like a banded collar (white...like I'm wearing in my Avatar) shirt and some black dress slacks with some casual shoes to match. Is that cool or should I ditch the dress code? a banded collar???? I mean, this is a just little portion of the whole picture, but I was wondering when I saw your avatar if you were a preacher. I'm not sure how you look with this shirt and a black trouser, but you might look like a preacher. Check this out with someone who knows you. And I think you have to be careful not to look like a waiter.

Cue song: "Oh, the only boy who could ever reach me, was the son of a preacher man" OK, I'm a guy, but as a European I start 2 steps ahead of you on fashion The advice already given is pretty good, but you should definitely lose the shirt. White is too formal for a first date and that collar is, well.... hmmm. If you are feeling formal, go with a slightly more interesting shirt, standard collar, 2 buttons undone. Otherwise, go for the smart sweater and layers.
Donut Posted March 16, 2005 Posted March 16, 2005 I think the casual look, nice jeans (not ripped or dirty) and a nice t-shirt or shirt is great. No ratty old footwear either. Important to be freshly washed and smelling great too!

I asked my BF WTF he washes his clothes in because they smell so good! LOL swear his laundry smelled way better than mine! He can work all day and at the end of the day his clothes still smelled good.. turns out it's the fabric softner he uses with his laundry. He always smells clean
Impressive1 Posted March 16, 2005 Posted March 16, 2005 I would say it depends on where you are planning on going and doing. On a first date though, I would rather it be more casual as well. Jeans and a nice shirt will do, but definately no cowboy boots!

Been accused of looking and dressing like a musician or writer though... hmm I am a musician LOL! Ok banded collar shirt gone Anything more? These are some good tips keep em coming
tiki Posted March 16, 2005 Posted March 16, 2005 I can't imagine dating a guy with a suit and tie on, but that's just me. I say go for the nicer pair of jeans (dark ones) a casual button up shirt (maybe even with the sleeves rolled up some) a starch white t-shirt underneath and a pair of docs or sketchers -- leather of course. And smell nice, definitely.
Author SleepingLover Posted March 16, 2005 Author Posted March 16, 2005 Ok how bout something like this? Too dressy or would a man dressed like this sweep a lady off her feet? Heheh How about with a turtleneck?
tokyo Posted March 16, 2005 Posted March 16, 2005 What do you think will the lady wear? And where are you going? By the way, I didn't really like the stuff this guy was wearing. It doesn't look good, a bit too big and I don't like the color. Also I don't like the way the material of his jacket is falling. I think it's more important to have a good posture, then you can wear a lot of things and look good.
tiki Posted March 16, 2005 Posted March 16, 2005 I don't like that look. Go for the metrosexual look. It's not an interview, it's a date. Be comfortable!
tiki Posted March 16, 2005 Posted March 16, 2005 You're getting there, but still too formal, don'tcha think? Unless you're going out to a super-expensive place?
tokyo Posted March 16, 2005 Posted March 16, 2005 Originally posted by SleepingLover How bout this? It looks awful with his shirt tugged in his pants. And the color - awful. The material - awful. tiki Posted March 16, 2005 Posted March 16, 2005 A shirt like this Pants like this and some shoes like this Viola!
tokyo Posted March 16, 2005 Posted March 16, 2005 http://www.nortonmotors.de/prominenz%20gb.htm He should wear stuff like this, it's so simple, but I don't know, he looks so great in it.

I'm pretty picky too.. that is why I posed the original question InternationalMale used to have some very nice casual stuff, but lately it has been junk. Some of the materials are very cheap and the prices are exhorbent. I bought a pair of, what looked like, nice jeans from them once. Geez, they were paper thin LOL!
